John Stetson was born October 28, 1731, in what is now Randolph, Massachusetts (then part of the town of Braintree). He was a son of Amos Stetson and Margaret Thayer Stetson.[1]
John Stetson was a farmer and lived in the part of Braintree that later became Randolph. [2]
In 1776, during the American Revolution War, he served in Sawen's Swain-2113 Braintree, Suffolk County Company. start date=Mar 4, 1776 end date=Jun 19, 1776. [2][3]
He married Rachel Paine (Payne). Eleven children were born to the marriage. Their births were not recorded in Braintree records; the first eight children all were baptized at the South Precinct of Braintree on 26 June 1774. The children were: [4][2]
Gideon Stetson, Jan. 18, 1762, marriage intention April 3, 1784, Anne (or Nancy) Thayer.
Sarah Stetson, Sep. 16, 1763, marriage intention Feb. 1, 1783, Samuel Thayer.
Rachel Stetsonl, Dec. 19, 1764, marriage intention Jan. 17, 1784, Reuben Thayer. Removed to Belchertown.
John Stetson, Apr. 12, 1766. Went to sea, never heard from. [2]
Amasa Stetson, Mar. 26, 1769 (GS), married ("Amica Studson") Aug. 21, 1798 at Boston, Rebecca Kettell. He died Aug. 2, 1844 at Dorchester, no children.
Simeon Stetson, Oct. 26, 1770, married Elizabeth Kidder of New Ipswich, N.H. Resided in Washington, N.H, New Ipswich, N.H. & Hampden, Maine.
Esther Stetson, Jul. 23, 1784, married Sep. 6, 1802 at Boston, William Barry, parents of Rev. John Stetson Barry, author of Hist. of Mass. etc.
Rachael Paine Stetson died November 6, 1793, "in her 52nd year." John Stetson in Randolph, Massachusetts, on January 30, 1811, at the reported age of 81. Both are buried in Central Cemetery in Randolph, Massachusetts (Sprague called it "GS Central Cemetery).[4][5]
