Biography

Gerrit Segers was born April 1685 at Kingston, Ulster county, New York and was baptized at Reformed Dutch Church, Kingston, Ulster County, New York April 20, 1685. The baptism record of the Kingston Dutch Church shows the baptism on 20 April 1685 of Gerrit, son of Frederic Gerritz and Lysbeth Tack. No witnesses were recorded.[1]

According to Clarke (no sources cited), he married Maria Groot Segers in about 1712.[2]

Children

Children found in church records are:

  1. Anastasius was born November 8, 1715 on the Boterberg (Buttermountain, now known as Storm King Mountain), Ulster County, New York, recorded as a child of Gerhard Sager and wife Maria. He was baptized by a minister of the New York Lutheran Church on April 29, 1716 in the house of Jurgen Loockstadt in the Highland. Witnesses were Peter and Laetitia Makrigeri.[3]
  2. Frerik, recorded as the child of Gerrit Segers and Maritien Segers, was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of Schenectady, New York, on 2 November 1717. Witnesses were Benjamin Van Vlee--- and Elisabet Brouwers.[4] Pat Wardell identified the male witness as Benjamin Van Vleck.[5]
  3. Johan, recorded as the child of Gerrit Seger and Maritien Seger, was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of Schenectady, New York, on 30 March 1719. Witnesses were Simon Volkerts and Ariaentien Volkerts.[6]
  4. Lydia, recorded as the child of Gerrit Seger and Maritien Segers, was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of Schenectady, New York, on 21 January 1721. The witnesses were Isaak Valk and Lydia Van Slyk.[7]
  5. Zantje (Susanna) Zeger, who married Jan Bradt in Albany on 31 July 1742, is identified by Pat Wardell as his child.[5][8]

Clarke also lists, without source citations:[2]

  • Elizabeth, born 1713; died young.
  • Elizabeth, born about 1723.
  • Maria, born about 1727; married Simon Springsteen, son of Casper.
  • Gerrit, born about 1730.

Gerrit was born in 1685. Gerrit Sager Segers ... He passed away about 1756.[9]

Metje de Groot (bef.1678-) was connected as his wife, but has been removed. His wife is inferred to have been a different woman with a similar name.
