Biography

Solomon Snow was born in 1761 in Windham County, Connecticut. He was the son of Oliver Snow and his wife, Elizabeth (Phillips) Snow.

Solomon Snow left Connecticut and went north as a young man. He settled in Berkshire County, still a frontier area at that time, western Massachusetts. There he married Eunice Hopkins, born September 11, 1777. The couple had at least 5 sons, born in or near Otis, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, USA:

  1. Alanson "Alonzo" B. Snow b: 28 Apr 1798 in Bethlehem District, Otis, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, USA
  2. Nathan R. Snow, b: 2 Mar 1800 in Otis, Berkshire, Mass., USA
  3. Daniel Snow b: 2 Sep 1806 in Otis, Berkshire, Massachusetts
  4. Solomon Snow Jr. b: 16 May 1808 in Otis, Berkshire, Mass., USA
  5. Silas Snow b: 11 Dec 1811 in Otis, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts

Solomon's oldest son, Alanson B. Snow ("Alonzo") left Massachusetts in the 1820s, moving west, traveling across New York State to the shores of Lake Erie. At some point, either with his wife Eunice or possibly after her death, Solomon Snow followed his son to Chautauqua County in western New York State, a journey of over 350 miles, a significant distance in that time, although greatly assisted by the opening of the Eire Canal in 1825.

Solomon Snow had a farm in Arkwright, Chautauqua County, New York. He died there in early 1851 and was buried in the local cemetery. He was nearly 90 years old.

Solomon Snow, Sr. (1761 – 1851) or his son Solomon Snow, Jr. (1809 – 1873) signed the following petition in the town of Arkwright (Chautauqua County) NY, probably about 1844: “Against the admission of more slave states into the Union. To the Congress of the United States. The undersigned Citizens & electors of the State of New York residing in Arkwright in the County of Chautauque respectfully pray that no State be hereinafter admitted into the Union unless the Constitution of such State shall expressly prohibit the existence of Slavery within its limits.” [1]

Snow, Sr. was a possible son of Oliver Snow, Sr. (1721 – 1796) and Elizabeth Phillips (1728 – 1761), and his possible siblings of record included Oliver, Jr. (1748 – 1841), Diadema (1750 – 1754), Asa (1752 – 1754), Asa (b. 1854), Diadema (b. 1756), Nathan (1759 – 1835), and twin Silas (b. 1761). Half-siblings of record included Amaziah (b. 1764), Parley (1765 – 1834), Elizabeth (1768 – 1791), Sabra (b. 1771), Jemima (1775 – 1791), and Ziba (n. d.).

The Solomon Snow, Sr. family probably came to Arkright about 1830. His wife was Eunice Hopkins (b. 1775), and other children of record in addition to Solomon, Jr. were Alanson (b. 1798), Nathan B. (b. 1800), Hannah (b. 1802), Roby (b. 1804), Daniel (b. 1806), and Silas (n. d.).

Snow, Jr. married Minerva Henry (1816 – 1908) from the Abbey area of Arkwright. Their children of record included Marga A. (b. 1836), Anna (b. 1842), Mary Theodecia (1844 – 1865), Minerva Alwilda (1846 – 1929), Frances (b. 1848), Emma (1853 – 1940), and Hannah (b. 1855). Both Solomon, Sr. and Solomon, Jr. owned land in Lot 20 in Arkwright. The 1854 county wall map showed two homes of S. Snow and a blacksmith shop near the Town Hotel, later known as Chicken Tavern. A short distance to the north, in the area later known as the Abbey, the D. Snow saw mill was shown.
