Nathan Snow was born 10 December 1759 in Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut to Oliver Snow and Elizabeth Phillips. He died in Becket, Berkshire, Massachusetts, on October 18, 1835. He had many brothers and sisters, including several half-siblings. Twins seem to have run in this family because Nathan is said to have had a twin brother, Solomon and another set of twin siblings. Solomon and Silas Snow were born in 1761. (There may be confusion between Solomon and Solomon as both have same death dates of 1796, according to the research of Snow descendant, Rose Partheymuller, so that Nathan may not really have had a twin brother. The Solomon & Silas Snow born in 1761 were definitely twins.)[1]

Nathan Snow lived in Ashford, Connecticut until 1779, when he moved to Becket, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He was a Revolutionary War veteran who enlisted three times as a private from Ashford CT for terms of (a) three months beginning November 1776, (b) two months beginning September 1777, and (c) two months beginning 1 January 1778. He was later drafted for a one-month term in the month of September 1778 specifically to work on Fort Trumbull in New London, Connecticut. Finally, as a Sergeant this time, he was drafted as a new resident of Becket, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, substituting for a sergeant for a two-month term from July 1779 at New Haven, Connecticut. In each of these tours of duty he spent his time guarding the respective towns, building breastworks, or working on maintenance projects of existing defenses. Nathan later received a military pension for his service.[2][3] Note Capt Caleb Stone served with the 5th Regt CT.

Nathan Snow had two wives. He married Thankful Pettibone on 20 October 1785. They had 4 children:

  1. Thankful Snow (1787 - 1860); m: Ralph Snow
  2. Nathan Snow Jr (1793 - 1815)
  3. Letitia Snow (1800 - 1894); m: Austin Davis, 1816
  4. Nelson Snow (1801 - 1815)

Thankful (Pettibone) Snow died in 1812. Nathan then married widow Martha "Patty" (Chaffee) Davis on 11 Feb 1813. She was the mother of 11 children by her first husband, Edward Davis (d: 1807).

Nathan Snow passed away on October 18, 1835, at his farm in Becket, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA. He was buried at the Yokum Cemetery (private land), there. His 2nd wife, Martha "Patty" Chafee (Davis) Snow, had died on February 18, 1835, just 7 months before her husband. They are buried together at the Yokum Cemetery. [4]

In his will, written 3 November 1829, proven 1 March 1836, in Pittsfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts, Nathan Snow cites his 2nd wife Patty; daughter Thankful, wife of Ralph Snow, & daughter Letitia, wife of Austin Davis. The Sole executer was Lawton Wadsworth. As both of his sons preceded him in death, Nathan Snow left his farm in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, to his elder daughter Thankful (Snow) Snow and his home farm in Becket, Berkshire, Massachusetts to his younger daughter, Letitia "Lettie" (Snow) Davis.
