Biography

John Parmelee, son of John, [1] John was born about 1615.

He married Rebecca Eaton at Guilford, CT, she died on 29 Sep. 1651.[1]

He married Anna Plane/Plaine widow of William Plaine, in 1651, she died on 30 March 1658.[1]

He married Hannah on 3 Feb. 1659,[1]

John died on 31 Jan. 1689.[1] He was buried in Fair Haven Union Cemetery, Connecticut, United States.[2]

Bio info by Totten-199:

Sailed to America in 1635 aboard the Elizabeth and Ann at age 20, listed as Jo Palmerley. He probably arrived in Charleston, MA in the late spring or early summer of 1635. He lived in New Haven, CT and later, in 1639 is said to have joined his father in Guilford.

Through his second wife, he obtained Plaine's home lot and four and a half acres of marsh land. He was a drummer in the train band and was sworn as freeman on 14 Feb 1649. He acted as sexton for many years and 'warned' (alerted) the inhabitants to town meetings.

His will is dated 23 December 1684.[3] The inventory of John Parmely deceased was taken at Guilford on 8 February 1687/88 and recorded at New Haven.[3]

Note

He was the first member of the family to immigrate to America, arriving four years before his father. "Jo. Palmerley" is listed as a 22-year-old passenger on the Elizabeth and Anne when it left the Port of London on April 13, 1635, and arrived at the Charlestown section of Boston late that spring or early summer. No other family members are listed on that roster.

He was one of the original settlers of Guilford, his first home lot being a 1.5-acre parcel on the east side of Crooked Lane, the fourth lot north of Buck Lane. He took the oath of freeman in Guilford on Feb. 14, 1649/50, a little less than a year after his father did. He became the drummer of the train band, the colony's chief defense unit, and served as sexton for many years, "warning" settlers to meetings and church services by beating his drum. His name appears in Guilford's town records, being sued in 1648 by a fellow planter who complained that John's hogs had rooted through his corn, and for reporting to train band practice while intoxicated on 1 January 1656/1657. John was first married to Rebecca (it has not been proven that her last name was Eaton) probably in England. She died 24 or 29 September 1651 at Guilford, Connecticut. John was married second in Guilford in 1651 to Anna, buried 30 March 1658 at Guilford, the widow of William Plaine. In 1649 William, another signer of the Plantation Covenant, became the first person executed in New Haven after being found guilty of sodomy and "corrupting boys." John and Anna had no children. In February 1658/1659, John took for his third wife his step-daughter, Hannah, the daughter of William and Anna Plaine/Plane.

Research Notes

There is a record showing:

John was baptised on 6 September 1612 in All Saints, Lewes, Sussex, England.[4]

Immigration

JUN 1635, Arr. Charlestown, Massachussets Bay Colony aboard the Elizabeth and Anne.

The Great Migration profile of the Elizabeth and Ann passenger in 1635 finds no evidence that this is the same John Parmalee, later of Guilford, although admits the possibility. [5]

John arrived in 1639 in Connecticut[6]

Marriage

John married Anne Plum(?) in 1651 in Guilford, Connecticut, United States.[7]

Facts

14 FEB 1648/49
Took oath of Freeman, Guilford, CT

Have posted the following lengthy comment to the profile of John Parmelee (bef.1584-1659).
This Parmelee-32 PGM profile is one of several related to the same WikiTree "Warning 420: Unmarried parents with other marriages." In a nutshell, Parmelee-239 (John Parmelee II/not PGM) is reported the son of this Parmelee-32 and Howell-325 (Ann Howell), but the mother is not reported married to our Parmelee-32/John Parmelee (PGM).
What can we do to resolve this Warning 420?
I am able to trace the Parmelee-32/Howell-325 parentage/marriage claims to Jim Walters, and perhaps others, "England to Connecticut: The First Generations" in "The Family Parmelee"; web content, The Family Parmelee, viewed 22 January 2023 (last updated 29 March 2021).
Walters' research about the area of Lewes is worthy, but the associated genealogical claims are mostly based on parish records and not above dispute. The site identifies our immigrant as the son of John Parmelee (____-1583) and Alice Russell. (Surely otherwise the detached WikiTree parents.) In theory, Alice would otherwise be the "widow Paremerye" we report about in the 1584 baptismal record.
The Family Parmelee site continues--referring to various parish records--claiming our immigrant married five (5) times--1608 [about age 24], 1630 [about age 46], 1635 [about age 51], 1638 [about age 54] and 1653 [about age 69]--and by the first four wives, became the father of 13 children, "only three of whom are known to have survived to adulthood." I reviewed the work swiftly, but did not note common evidence supporting proof of the wives' LNAB (wills/court records); the site claims burial dates for the first three wives.
It is not impossible for a man to have married five (5) times, but such would be rare. Based solely on date clusters, these marriages could be about at least three different men named John. (See Ann Browning's comment, "It looks like there are two John Parmaleys floating around Lewes …")
To the point of the question--what collaborative approach should we take to resolve this Warning 420?
  • Mostly follow the Parmalee site, supplemented by Ann Browning's parish register work, and report the five marriages, etc.; possibly marking the first four (including "Anne Howell") as uncertain?
  • Report only three marriages--Anne _____ (uncertain) or Anne Howell (uncertain), claimed the mother of immigrant John Parmelee-239/not PGM; Hannah _____ (Unknown-334855), claimed the mother of immigrant Hannah Parmelee-285/not PGM and only perhaps the mother of immigrant Mary Parmelee-16/not PGM; also then Elizabeth _____ (now Elizabeth Sheaffe-7), the woman who survived as John's widow.
  • Some other array?
In any event, seems it might be a good idea to create a research notes page that would consolidate historical evidence and the various "disputed" claims on the associated and/or severed profiles, with some summary of the same posted as research notes on the related profiles.
What do we think? Is there a way forward to resolve the Warning?--Gene

According to this source his mother was Hannah, and his birth was approx 1620. Are there any sources show this birth date and mother?

Parmelee-33 and Parmelee-107 appear to represent the same person because: likely to be the same person, same spouse Hannah Plaine.

Alternate birth year can go into merged Bio.
