Biography

Leigh Taffe has Irish ancestors.

I descend from the The Irish Settlement family lines of Philip Cain and Margaret Smith, Cornelius Farrelly and Margaret Burns, Nicholas O'Neill and Mary White, and Thomas Taaffe and Margaret Ward.

Though there is no specific badge for it, I am a Tree Builder.

I have always been fascinated with my family history. My grandfather, Thomas Taffe, would take me on long rides in the countryside in a tri-county area that is known as The Irish Settlement, where he would point out various locations, and he would dazzle me with stories about our family and the other Irish families who first settled the area. He would always say to me, "I am telling you these things because it is important to know who you come from to understand who you are."

In 1986, I took this love of family history and sat down with my great-grandmother, Margaret (Farley) Taffe, and interviewed her for a school genealogy project. She was 83 years old at the time, and her mind was still sharp as a tack. What I learned that afternoon was just how connected the Irish families who originally settled the area really were. I was related to almost everyone that I knew!

Now, over thirty years later, this middle school project of The Irish Settlement has grown into a database of over 61K individuals. I also work in conjunction with the Sullivan County, Pennsylvania Historical Society, based in Laporte, Pennsylvania, as their "go to" resource for the Irish families. There have been times I have found that I know more about an individual's family history than even they do! Additionally, I am a member of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Genealogical Society.

I am excited to be a part of WikiTree and sharing all of the years of hard work and dedication that I have spent building my database.

Recently, I have started delving more into genetic genealogy and DNA tests. Thus far, I have received many positive matches that corroborate my research.

DNA Success

  • Maternal relationship is confirmed with an AncestryDNA test match between K and Leigh Taffe Adams, parent/child. Predicted relationship reported by AncestryDNA: Parent/Child - immediate family member based on sharing 3,483 cM across 57 segments; Confidence: Extremely High.
  • Maternal relationship is confirmed with a 23andMe test match between Leigh Taffe Adams and Laura Chamberlain, half-sisters. Predicted relationship from 23andMe: "Half-sisters based on 25.2% DNA shared across 48 segments."
  • Paternal relationship is confirmed with an AncestryDNA test match between Shirley Setzer and Leigh Taffe Adams, grandparent/grandchild. Predicted relationship reported by AncestryDNA: Close family - 1st cousins based on sharing 2,152 cM across 58 segments; Confidence: Extremely High.
  • Paternal relationship is confirmed with an AncestryDNA test match between Margaret Taffe Hoodak and Leigh Taffe Adams, great-aunt/great-niece. Predicted relationship reported by AncestryDNA: 2nd cousins based on sharing 638 cM across 23 segments; Confidence: Extremely High.
  • Additionally, there are multiple second, third, fourth and fifth cousin autosomal DNA matches satisfactorily confirming my descendancy from Nicholas O'Neil & Mary White.

WikiTree Activity

  • Update 23 Nov 2017

I have been very busy transferring information to WikiTree. My current "working" tree on Ancestry has over 56K individuals so, as you can imagine, it is a slow process moving the information from one platform to another. I have played around with uploading smaller bits of data through GEDCom, but I am not sure I like the process of having to clean up the profiles afterwards. This project is a work-in-progress.

For now, my Irish Settlement Tree is open to the public on Ancestry.

I am attempting to use a methodical approach to organizing and categorizing individuals as I input them, as well as completing source information. Though, admittedly at times, I find myself getting too caught up on the "proper" way to document the source or finding alternate ways for others to view the sources that have come from subscription sites, and it tends to slow my progress. Additionally, I am continuing to administer my genealogy groups which tends to divert my time and attention on occasion.

Hi Leigh, my name is Shannon! My great-great grandmother was Anna Taafe, the daughter of Richard Taafe, who is the son of Thomas Taafe and Margaret Ward. It seems like Thomas is my great-great-great-great grandfather, so it seems you and I may be related. I would love to talk to you more and learn more about our shared family history. Please let me know if you're interested. Thank you.

Hi Shannon. Thanks for reaching out. Richard, the son of Thomas Taaffe and Margaret Ward, did not have any daughters named Anna. You, like many others, are most likely confusing him with Richard, the son of Peter Taafe and Alice Maguinis. Your Richard was born in County Louth, Ireland on 29 Jun 1846, Ireland. Mine was born in 29 Apr 1845 at Beaver Meadows, a small mining town in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. Your Richard emigrated to Youngstown, Ohio, and later settled with his family in Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania. My Richard and your Richard are related though I have not determined how yet. However, I have verified dozens of DNA matches to descendants of Richard and almost all of his siblings as well. I have a much more extensive family tree on Ancestry that works out the various Taaffe/Taffe/Taafe family lines.

Hi, Leigh

The Ambassadors project has been reorganizing and is looking for those who have a membership at a genealogical society, to help in spreading the word about WikiTree.

We're working on ways to improve how WikiTree connects and interacts with genealogical and local history societies. This is the kind of thing we want to do:

  • Liaise with societies: set up your local society with a free-space page and some WikiTree materials as part of a package.
  • Use social media to promote what societies are offering on WikiTree.
  • Encourage bloggers to blog about societies and the resources available to them on WikiTree.

Are you interested in participating in some way? Do you have some ideas to share?
