Sarah was born Nancy Underdahl in Portland, Oregon. She moved with her mother to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1955, when her mother was attending graduate school at the University of New Mexico. Her mother remarried Donald G. Woodard and they moved to Gallup, New Mexico. Her sister, Cori-Ann Woodard, was born in 1959. Sarah finished elementary school in Gallup, moved with her mother and sister back to Portland, Oregon in 1964. She went to Mount Tabor Elementary for 7th Grade, Rose City Park Elementary for 8th Grade, and Madison High School. She then attended Portland State University for two years before moving to Seattle, Washington, where she finished her undergraduate education at the University of Washington in 1978. In 1979, she married Craig Rose in Portland, Oregon, before they moved to Seattle, where they have lived ever since. Sarah and Craig had three children born to them. Jessamyn Rose, born 19 Jan 1981, died of cancer (Rhabdomyosarcoma) on 27 Jun 1983. Quinn Rose and David Rose (now Rosewater) came later, and then came David Hollingsworth, Sarah's cousin-by-marriage (her mother's third marriage to Theodore Valentine Hollingsworth). Sarah went on to finish a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Washington and then taught Special Education.
