Biography

The origins of Thomas Falland/Folland are not known at this time; all indications point to him hailing from England. What we know is that he migrated to New England in 1639, settling in Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony.[1][2]

A Few Known Facts:

  • He was propounded as freeman on March 3, 1639/40.[3]
  • Anthony Gilpin complained of him in a court action on June 17, 1641, saying he had trespassed. He was charged with the suit and assessed xxix s (39), xj d, obj.[4]
  • He was listed among those able to bear arms in Yarmouth, New Plymouth in 1643.[5]

Noting Thomas's will, it seems we can conclude that he was a weaver, and perhaps that is how he made his living.[6]

Thomas Folland died at Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Plymouth Colony in 1687 with no will on file (testate). Later, his son Thomas Folland died without producing children, so the male line of this family came to an end.[7]

The Will of Thomas Folland, Sr., of Yarmouth. Mr. Edmund Haws and John Miller of Yarmouth, executors. Will signed by a mark; dated 1 Oct., 1686; proved 31 May 1687. Witnesses, Jasper Taylor, Nathaniel Tomlin, Recorded 4 June 1687, by Joseph Lothrop, Deputy Register. [p. 6] Inventory taken 30 May, 1687, by Jasper Taylor and Jonathan White. Amt. L19, 5s. 6d. Debts, L10, 19s.[6][8]

Children

(Listed in order of their father's will)[6]
  1. Thomas Folland Jr. had no children. He was named in his father's will, dated Oct 1, 1686 and proved May 31, 1687. In Thomas Jr's. will, dated Nov. 23, 1721 and proved Jan. 18, 1721/2, he bequeathes "To my cousin Thomas Whelden of Yarmouth... To my cousin Elizabeth Whelden... To my cousin Jonathan Whelden of Yarmouth."[7]
  2. Mary Folland b. about 1627, m. John Whelden about 1653, d. between May 20, 1711 (sister Elizabeth's will) and Nov. 23, 1721 (brother Thomas's will);[9]Mary was named in her father's will dated Oct. 1, 1686 and proved May 31, 1687. "...To my daughter Mary, wife of John Whilding, 5s."[7]
  3. Elizabeth made a will on May 20, 1711 and died just before July 10, 1714. She was named her sister Mary (Folland) Whelden and brother Thomas Folland. She was named in her father's will dated Oct. 1, 1686 and proved May 31, 1687. "...To my daughter Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Hall..." Elizabeth's first husband was Samuel Hall who d. 1696. Elizabeth m. (2nd) on Apr 27, 1699 to Jeremiah Jones[10] who d. at Yarmouth Nov. 4, 1705. Elizabeth's will dated May 20, 1711 as "Elizabeth Jones, widder woman." of Yarmouth, bequeathed to her "brother Thomas Folland, her cousin Elizabeth Whelden, the daughter of my sister Mary, and cousin Mary Wheelden, the daughter of Thomas Wheelden."[7]It is clear she had no children from either marriage.[10]
  4. Deborah named in her father's will; seems at that time to be unmarried as she is listed with surname "Folland."[6]

Research Notes

  • In the entire Will which is printed in "The Mayflower Descent", an additional daughter is listed, namely "Deborah Folland". She is not listed in the parcial Will printed at the bottom of page 6 in The American Geneologist article "John and Mary (Folland) Whelden of Yarmouth, Mass." by McLean[6][7]nor in any other source thus far discovered (2/15/2022).
  • A marriage record in Cuckfield, Sussex in 1621 (bottom right). A Thomas Folland and Mary Woord were married April 15, 1621. It is indexed as Folland. See here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-XC7S-JDF. This information cannot be used on this profile at this time, since we don't know where the migrating Thomas Folland was from in England.

Hi, in a couple weeks I plan to update this profile for the March 2023 BioBuilders.

EDIT: I'm not sure what needs to be updated here, or why it is in the maintenance category "needs biography." So I'm moving on to another profile.

PGM added as co-manager. Please continue to manage profile as usual

after a full 2 weeks, I've deleted the source list - inline citations are present in the biography.

I'm not understanding why PGM has not been added as profile manager?

I see the maintenance category "needs biography" is present on this profile. I'm not sure when or why this category has been added.

Needing explanations, please. Thank you.

I've left the long source list in this biography, for now. Later, after others have reveiwed this profile, it can be deleted. Thanks.
An additional child, Deborah Folland, has been added since she is listed in his will here: [1]
Hi Eileen, you can see I've researched Thomas Folland and have discovered he is the identical person as Thomas Falland who is listed in "The Great Migration Directory." That he is in the directory indicates that Robert Charles Anderson, well-known genealogists and author of the Great Migration Series, believes Folland/Falland migrated in 1640 or before; thus his profile is elligible to be included in the wikitree project "Puritan Great Migration." The project will soon be added as a manager.

I see you've been inactive for over two years, but I want to notify you that I will proceed to create a biography for Thomas Folland/Falland, then will also work on his children.

Also, I want you to know that research does not indicate that he should have the prefix "Sir" so that will be removed.

Enjoy today!

I've added sources and will return to write biography.
