Christopher Marshall was baptized at Alford, Lincolnshire on April 17, 1614; the son of Christopher Marshall[1]a mercer of Alford, Lincolnshire.[2]
He matriculated at Magdelene College in 1632 but did not complete his degree. Migrating in 1634 he completed his education with John Cotton, minister in Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony. As a "singleman" Christopher Marshall became a member of the church on August 28, 1634; freeman on May 6, 1635. He was dismissed from the Boston church with Wheelwright and seven others 'unto the Church of Christ at the Falls of Paschataqua (Exeter) if they be rightly gathered and ordered.'[2][1]
In his lifetime, it is believed Christopher married 3 times and had children with each of his wives as follows:[1]
However, Anderson on p. 35 of "The Great Migration" says it is possible he may have had only two wives. #1, the mother of Anna; and #2 Sarah who was buried at Yorkshire on February 23, 1657.[1]
By about 1639 Christopher Marshall had returned permanently to England and was residing at Woodkirk [West Ardsley], Yorkshire following his calling as a minister of the gospel (as he refered to himself in his will.)[1]
The parliamentary survey of 1650 indicates he was a vicar of Wakefield and Horbury chapel, and rector of West Ardesley (Woodkirk) in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He was "ejected" at West Ardesley in 1662. Afterwards he may have lived at Topcliffe Hall which belonged to the Savile family, having meetings there from 1662 - 1665. By 1669 he was preaching the gospel in the parish of Darfield and by 1672 he owned a house at Topcliffe where he lived. Moore says on p. 195 that "he was licensed to preach at his own home and at West Ardesley, but not permitted to preach in the vacant chapel at Morley."[2]
The will of Christopher Marshall was dated January 10, 1672/3; the date of it being proved is unknown. He bequeathed to his sister Anne Wharfe and her children; his brother Bernard and his children; his daughters Sarah and Bathshua; his wife Mrs. Sara Marshall. He died sometime after the date of his will.[1]
Under "Associations" Anderson gives information about Christopher Marshall's (the elder) children by saying, "In Alford, Lincolnshire, we find the baptisms of thirteen children to a Christopher Marshall, from 1583 through 1617/17, the first six with a first wife and the last seven with a second wife. So with the 1st wife, he adds Bernard, baptized August 23, 1588; with 2nd wife he had Anna baptized September 15, 1611 and Christopher baptized April 17, 1614." He may be a cousin of Thomas Marshall.[1]
From the Alford Parish Registers[3]: 1582 Christopher Marshall and Joan Cook (d.1603) married 25th November
1603 Christopher Marshall (d.1620) and Joan Browne married 10th November
