Biography

No sources have been found to support Richard Green (1560-1617) as Bartholomew's father; this association was severed. 'Robert Charles Anderson (1995) reports his origins are unknown.

Bartholomew Green was born, probably England, by about 1590 (age at estimated marriage). He died at Cambridge (then "Newe Towne"),[1] Massachusetts Bay Colony, by 8 February 1635/6.[2]

Bartholomew married, probably England, by 1615, Elizabeth _____ (assuming she was the mother of all his children). She was born, probably England, 1589 (age at death). Elizabeth died in Cambridge, 28 October 1577, aged 88 years.[3] In the January 1658/9 compilation of Cambridge church members, "Elizabeth Green the wife of Bartholomew deceased," was reported a member in full communion; the record mentions her four children, Samuel (then married), Nathaniel, Phebe and Sarah (then married).[4]

Immigration

The details of the family's immigration are unknown or unproven. Robert Charles Anderson placed Bartholomew Green's immigration to Cambridge at 1633.[5] In 1950, William C. Kiessel claimed the family migrated aboard the Griffin, dropping anchor at Boston, 4 September 1633.[6] Anderson (1995) wrote, "This is certainly plausible, but not proven."

At Massachusetts Bay Colony

Bartholomew Green was made a freeman at Cambridge, 14 May 1634.[7] He was "granted six acres in the Westend Field on 1 December 1634."[8]

He is considered a considered a Founder of Hartford, even though he never lived there, having died prior to the Rev. Hooker’s main party’s departure. Nonetheless, he had “several parcells of land in Hartford on the river of Conecticot, part wherof was sequestred for Bartholomew Greene, & now setled on John Crow by the inhabitants of this towne.”[9]

Family

Bartholomew and Elizabeth (_____) Green were the parents of four children, all born England,

  1. Samuel Green, born say 1615; married (1) by 1640, Jane Banbury, daughter of Guy and Justice Banbury;[10] married (2) in Cambridge, 22 February 1662, Sarah Clark, daughter of Jonas Clark. Immigrant to New England.
  2. Nathaniel Green, born say 1620, died after 29 April 1693, presumably unmarried.[11] Immigrant to New England.
  3. Sarah Green, born say 1626; married, by 1647 (child born 1647), Thomas Longhorn.[12] Immigrant to New England.
  4. Phoebe Green, born say 1629; married in Cambridge, 15 August 1661, William Healy.[13] Immigrant to New England.

Research Notes

Widow's will. Elizabeth Green's will was dated 8 June 1672, proved 20 November 1677.[14]

Birth and parentage unknown. A prior version of this profile reported he was the son of Richard Green (1560-1617). As recently as 2023, Bartholomew's birth location was reported "Towcester, Northamptonshire, England," but no reference or proof of this was shown.

TGMB does NOT give information about a father. We need a scholarly source for the father on this profile, otherwise they should be detached from each other with notes on both profiles.

About arrival on the ship "Griffin" TGMB says "claim... family arrived on the Griffin in the fall of 1633 [NEHGR104:81]. ... certainly plausible, but not proven."
