The baptism records in England spell the name, Bate, and Robert C. Anderson in his Great Migration series spells the name, Bate.[1] Some of the older secondary sources use the spelling, Bates, and some of the later generations appear to have adopted this spelling. Per Albert C. Bates, "The addition of the final "s" appears to be an American innovation, often making its first appearance with the second generation of the family born in this country, although the time of change is in nowise uniform."[2]
NEHGS purchased in 1917 a copy of the transcription of the vital records of Hingham, in two volumes, extracted by Reuben Hersey (1780-1844) who began the project around 1832 and finished in 1844.[3] The original record is no longer extant, and in Hershey's transcription, Joseph's name in his death record appears to have been spelled "Bates." Torrey always spelled the name, "Bates," in New England Marriages Prior to 1700, although we know Joseph's marriage record was spelled, "Bate."[4] Regardless of some of these transcriptions, we have excellent evidence that the first generations spelled the name, "Bate."
Joseph Bate was baptized on at Biddenden on 28 September 1628, a son of Clement Bate and his wife, Anna (Unknown).[1][5]
Joseph sailed aboard the Elizabeth which departed England on April 17, 1635. The passenger list included Joseph's parents, Clement and Anna, who were both 40 years old when they immigrated, and their five children: James age 14, Clement age 12, Rachell age 8, Joseph age 5, and Ben age 2. They also had two other passengers in their group who were listed as servants: Jo Winchester age 19 and Jarvice Gold age 30.[6] The family settled at Hingham, Massachusetts.
Joseph Bate married at Hingham ___ Jan 1657/8 to Esther Hilliard[7][8] (b Mar 25 1640 Boston MA d Jun 03 1709 Hingham), daughter of William and Hester Hilliard.[9]
The Boston Records: Hingham Marriages report that Joseph Bate married on "28 11 57" to Hester Hilliard.[10]
Joseph died on 30 Apr 1706 at Hingham, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.[11]
Executor was his son, Joshua.[11] His will dated 24 April 1706 names sons Joseph, Caleb, Joshua and Clement and four daughters (unnamed) and loving wife Esther. [12]
Joseph lived at Cohasset where he was a farmer. He owned 4 slaves who were 12 years and over.[11]
Joseph was mentioned in records as a bricklayer. He was made a freeman in 1672 Constable, from 1675 to 1678, inc. Selectman, 1671, 1677, 1684, and 1692. Was appointed sexton of the parish in 1673, and served in this capacity until the new meetinghouse was erected.[9]
He resided on the paternal homestead, South Street, Hingham.[9]
Children of Joseph and Esther:[11][7][13]
*Record (Hobart's Journal) actually reports daughter of Joseph Bate born 26 Sep 1663 (Not recorded in the Hingham Vitals.); Joseph Bates son born 30 Mar 1666 (Original Vital Records of Hingham states the name Caleb.)
