Biography

This is the profile for Thomas Chasse who had a son named Aquila who was baptized in Woolverstone in 1620.

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

Thomas' parentage and place of birth are unknown. It is unlikely that he was born in Woolverstone, as the Woolverstone parish registers contain no entries for any person with the name Chasse (or variant spellings) during 1570-1650 except for the records of son Aquila's baptism and the burials of Thomas and his wife.

Based on the estimated date of birth of his presumed eldest child (1618), Thomas was probably born sometime in 1588-1596, with about 1592 being a reasonable midpoint estimate.

If the Impington, Cambridgeshire marriage record referenced below relates to the marriage and Thomas and his wife, he was probably born in or near Impington and may have been the Thomas Chace who was baptized at St. Sepulchre in Cambridge on July 2, 1592.[1] If, on the other hand, the Stuston, Suffolk marriage record referenced below relates to the marriage of Thomas and his wife, he was probably born in or near Stuston.

Marriage

The identity of Thomas' wife has not been determined. Based on the estimated date of his presumed eldest child (1618), they were probably married about 1617. Their place of marriage has not been determined. No record of the marriage is contained in the Woolverstone parish register, so it is unlikely that they were married there.

Two marriage records have been found, either of which may relate to the marriage of Thomas and his wife:

  • Thomas Chase married Elizabeth Johnson, servant to Mr. Giles, on September 23, 1614 at St. Andrew, Impington, Cambridgeshire (60 miles from Woolverstone)[2]
  • Thomas Chase married Elz Turner in 1616 at Stuston, Suffolk (30 miles from Woolverstone)[3]

Children

Thomas and his wife probably had the children listed below. Only the baptismal record for son Aquila has been found. As found in the Woolverstone parish register, it reads as follows:

Aquila ye sonne of Thos Chasse was bap. ye 7th of January[4]

As discussed in the profile for Aquila Chase, son Aquila was probably Aquila Chase the New England immigrant. Thomas' parentage of a son named Thomas is based on the fact that Aquila Chase the New England immigrant had a brother Thomas who is thought to have been probably born a few years earlier. That immigrants Aquila and Thomas Chase were brothers is supported by a 1667 deed in which Aquila Chase of Newbury sold "his brother" Thomas Chase of Hampton all his land in Hampton.[5]

  1. Thomas, b. say 1618 presumably somewhere in England, m. about 1642 Elizabeth Philbrick in Hampton, Massachusetts Bay Colony, d. before October 5, 1652 in Hampton, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (See discussion and sources in Thomas' profile.)
  2. Aquila, bpt. January 7, 1619/20 in Woolverstone, m. about 1645 Anne Wheeler in Hampton, Massachusetts Bay Colony, d. about December 21, 1670 in Newbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (See discussion and sources in Aquila's profile.)

If the Impington marriage record referenced above relates to the marriage of Thomas and his wife, they also had a daughter named Sara, who was baptized at Impington, Cambridgeshire on June 11, 1615.[6]

Residency in Woolverstone

Based on the fact that there are no records of Thomas or any other Chasse (or variant spelling) in Woolverstone prior the baptismal record of his son Aquila in January 1619/20 and there is no baptismal record in Woolverstone for Thomas' presumed older son Thomas, who was probably born about 1618, Thomas probably moved to Woolverstone about 1619. Based on his burial record there, he presumably resided in Woolverstone from about 1619 until his death.

Wife's Death and Burial

Thomas' wife was buried in Woolverstone on December 12, 1624. Her burial record reads as follows:

The wyfe of Thomas Chasse buried ye 12 of December[7]

Death and Burial

Thomas was buried in Woolverstone on July 21, 1627. His burial record reads as follows:

Tho. Chasse bur ye 21 of July 1627[8]

Research Notes

Please do not merge this profile with that of Aquila Chase (formerly claimed as father of these brothers). See narrative of any of the above profiles for why he could not have been their father.

Perhaps it is time to revisit the unusual name of Aquila and propose that Thomas is a son of Richard the father of the first Aquila in Chesham. The dates would be about right.

I had hoped there would be that connection. However (as discussed in the profile of Thomas Chase, son of Richard Chase of Chesham), Elizabeth, the wife of Richard's son Thomas, was buried in London in 1625, making it difficult to see how he could have been the same Thomas Chase/Chasse whose wife was buried in Woolverstone in 1624.

If someone can find a way to get around Elizabeth's burial in London in 1625, that would be great. But so far, I am just coming up with farfetched ideas, such as she was first buried in Woolverstone in 1624, but then her exhumed and reburied in her old parish in London in 1625.

At St. Sepulchre, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire was baptized a Thomas Chace on 2 July 1592. Presumably he is the same who was married at St. Andrew, Impington, Cambridgeshire- Thomas Chase to Elizabeth Johnson, servant of Mr. Giles 23 Sep 1614. This couple had a daughter Sara baptized at Impington 11 Jun 1615. No other mentions of them at that location are apparent. This couple are just the right age to have been Aquila and Thomas's parents, though they are about 50 miles from Woolverstone in the next county over. Citations found on www.freereg.uk.org

Will someone from the PGM googlegroup Crew please respond to R. Acheson's comment? Thank you.
Richard -That's plausible. I remember running across those records before. There is also a record in Boyd's Marriage Index of the marriage of a Thomas Chase and an Elizabeth Turner in Stuston, Suffolk in 1616. I have found no further records of them and the Stuston parish registers are not extant until 1631. The 1616 marriage date is also consistent with Thomas and Aquila's birth dates. Stuston in 30 miles from Woolverstone.

I'll update the profile to mention these records are possibly relating to this profile's Thomas Chase.

Interesting to note that just prior to Thomas Chase and Elizabeth Johnson's (servant to Mr. Giles) marriage in the parish register occurs the baptism of a son to John Giles, Gent. and his wife Sara. Thomas and Elizabeth's daughter a short time later being baptized Sara (same spelling), perhaps for the name of her mistress?

Interesting also that Aquila's eldest child is named Sarah (even though his wife and 2nd daughter are both Anne). If he is in fact the Woolverstone Aquila (very likely) and his mother died young which seems the case, he might have named the first daughter for an older sister who had looked after him. He did later have a daughter Elizabeth as well. Coincidences?...

Based on the discussion in Aquila the immigrant's profile that suggests that his father was probably Thomas Chasse of Woolverstone, I suggest merging this profile into the profile for Thomas Chasse.

Chase-5086 and Chasse-196 appear to represent the same person because: per the discussion in the profile for Aquila Chase, it is reasonably likely that Thomas Chasse of Woolverstone was his father.
