John Blackler Colton was born in Devonshire in 1823.[1] He was the son of William Colton and Elizabeth Blackler.
In 1839 he emigrated with his family to South Australia on the ship Duchess of Northumberland.[2][3] He initially worked as a saddlemaker in Adelaide,[4] and in 1876 was elected premier of South Australia.[5]
He married Mary Cutting in 1844.[6] They had eight children, all born in Adelaide except Alfred who was born on a return visit to England:[7][8]
