Janet (Cook) Hartje has Scottish Ancestors.

I was born in Boone, Iowa. I lived in Boone until I graduated from college (Iowa State University). I moved to Ames, Iowa where I taught for several years, married my husband and subsequently moved to Wisconsin. We lived in Wisconsin for about five years and than moved to Minnesota. My husband is from North Dakota so we have the midwest covered. I am a fiber artist, love to make art quilts as well as traditional quilts, clothing, home dec and anything else fabric related. I am enjoying being a detective trying to find the missing pieces in my family history. I also enjoy travel and am planning a trip to Scotland and Iceland to cover part of my heritage (Scotland) and part of my husbands (Iceland).

Dear Germany Project member,

it's annual check-in time 2023. If you still wish to remain a member of the Germany Project, please reply to this post, by stating this intention. If we don’t hear from you in the next 30 days, your membership badge will be removed. In this case please don't be offended ... you're welcome to rejoin at any time. Please also note, that in order to receive help, with researching your German ancestors, membership is not mandatory. Just ask your questions in the G2G forum and tag them with Germany in order for knowledgeable people to see them.

If you wish to remain a member, we would like to learn more about your perception of the Germany Project in order to achieve a future development according to our members needs and wishes. For this, we created a survey, which we kindly ask you to fill-in.

In case you want to communicate, discuss and receive help about WikiTree in German, you might want to check out the WikiTree category at Compgen’s Discourse as well as the German Discord server Ahnenforschung.

Of course there’s still the official WikiTree Discord server, where we usually talk English. Feel free to learn more about Discord and the server at Help:Discord.

Kind regards from Black Forest

I think I should probably opt out for now as I am not much help to the group.

Hi Janet, I think there are generally different perceptions around, about what "being a project member" is about. For some, it seems, it's just another badge, without the motivation to actually improve some profiles for the project, for others it's the opposite or something in between. But of course improving profiles from documents in a foreign language (and script) is quite a challenge for a lot of people outside of the German language area. If you wish, you could still do some categorizing, review some merges or just improve some Germany related profiles every once in a while, but you can do all those things also without being a member, of course. So: do you stick with the decision to have your badge removed?

Kind regards: Flo

I’m sure I will keep adding to my husband’s and my own tree, slowly. If that is enough for you to consider me a member than I can stay.

Hi,

It’s Germany Project check-in time again! Please respond within the next 2 weeks and let me know if you’re still interested in participating with the Project. Remember, the only requirements for membership in the Germany Project are (1) that you work on at least one German profile every 6 months and (2) that you respond to this check-in.

Since you’re not working with one of our Sub-projects or Teams yet, please look at our main Project page for a full list and let me know which team you’d like to join.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. In your response, we welcome any feedback you may want to give on the project (what you like about it, what you’d like to see us do, what we could change, etc.)

If you ever have any questions, please ask. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Hi Traci, I would like to try to find out more about my husbands family who I believe are from Hamburg. Is there a subgroup for that area? Thanks for all the work you do on this site.

Janet -

While I can find absolutely NO possible way that Wikitree would have made you a 0.78% Descendant of Josephine (FENDERSON) HOUSEL (Fenderson-73 on Wikitree), without my full understanding, I am extending some leeway here. I DO see you associated with my g-g-grandmother(fenderson-73). However, there is a former resident of Madison, who now resides in Utah who I may be able to point to with respect to this anomaly.

You lost me with this. I do have a Fenderson in my tree but I don't think I have even added back that far on WikiTree yet. I am wondering if you sent this to the wrong person? or could you give me a less cryptic message?
posted by Janet (Cook) Hartje
Double checked and I do have Anna Fenderson (1807-1880) married to Owen Smith(1804-1871) in my tree. I don't see a Josephine Fenderson and I'm not sure where that connection would be, but they were a large family. It seems you are trying to say you don't believe the DNA? Is that correct?
posted by Janet (Cook) Hartje
Janet - I should have sent you the link to Josephine's page https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fenderson-73 so you could see for yourself that your are shown there as 0.78% related via DNA. At the time of my original message, I did not think to see if you also shared DNA with the siblings of Josephine's. Of course, now that you have mentioned Anna (FENDERSON) SMITH, sister to Josephine's father John Fenderson, John being the son of our common ancestor John Fenderson and Keziah "Dolly" Croxford. Sorry I was so dense about this that I did not understand that Wikitree was simply stating a percentage of DNA that you and I might have in common. It simply isn't an indication of two individuals descended from the same person (which in the case of Josephine, we differ, but in the case of her grandparents, we both can call them our ancestors).

Hope this explains my query. BTW- I look forward to knowing more about Ann (FENDERSON) SMITH's family. I currently only have improved data for her son Ira and his wife Anna (SLATER) and a list of five children (one only called 'infant').

Hi,

Now that you have had a little time to try WikiTree, there are a few more features you may find useful.

Ideas on what to include in a profile can be found in Styles and Standards, including some tips on writing biographies.

If you need to describe an event, an heirloom or a location relevant to your research, you may like to learn about Free Space Profiles.

Lastly, sometimes you'll run into unresponsive profile managers. We have a process for resolving those unfortunate situations.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask via my profile page.

It took me a while to think of trying that. Another way it helped was that I found my G3 grandmother's brothers living right next door, which helped me identify her mother, who had remarried.
Looking for your great grandfather, have you tried pulling up the 1870 census for the town he should be in and going page by page? I found one tough ancester that way; the transcription misread the name, so it didn't come up on a search. Good luck!
