Joseph was the eldest son of Joseph Edson and Experience (Holbrook) Edson. His paternal parentage is supported by the estate records of his father, which refer to his eldest son Joseph.[1] His mother's first name is supported by the birth records of his younger siblings Experience[2] and Samuel,[3] which included her name.
Joseph was probably born about 1679. His date of birth is estimated based on (1) the birth dates of his siblings Experience (1685)[2] and Samuel (1687),[3] (2) the fact his father's estate records state that Joseph was the eldest son and that Samuel was the fourth eldest son,[1] and (3) the assumption that there was a two-year interval between the birth of Experience (1685) and the third eldest son (say, 1683), between the birth of the third eldest son (say, 1683) and the second eldest son (say, 1681), and between the second eldest son (say, 1681) and Joseph.
Since his parents lived in Bridewater, he was very probably born there.
