(a) The registration of births, deaths and marriages was only made official in all of South Africa after 1900 (in the Cape Colony and Natal a bit earlier during the 19th century). (b) Consequently, it was only after 1900 that the spelling of names and surnames became standardised in some ways. (c) For the period before 1900 church records (i.e. baptisms, confirmations, marriages and death registers) were the only important sources available to the genealogist. (d) The parents of babies that were baptised before 1900, in most cases could hardly read or write properly and did not know HOW to spell their own surnames correctly! (e) Now the “Cape of Good Hope Wiki Tree Project” regard the spelling of surnames found in baptismal records as the correct spelling of the LNAB which I find difficult to comprehend. (f) It might even look convincing to add the scan to the profile - but then only in cases where the surnames (LNAB) were spelled correctly or else explain the wrong alternative spellings please (e.g. the Dutch letter "ij"and "y" is identical).

On the flip side of the coin consider the following undeniable points: (1) For the benefit of South African family researchers and genealogists the spelling of surnames has already been standardised by the widely accepted publications of C.C. de Villiers & Dr Cornelis Pama, Dr J,A. Heese and Dr R.T.J. Lombard dating back to the sixties, seventies and eighties of the previous century. (2) The various spellings (for the same ancestor and his descendants) of South African surnames (LNAB) can be very confusing, especially for beginners in the genealogical field. (3) Also the poor child whose parents could not spell their own surname correctly had no say (later in life) on how he/she preferred to be called (LNAB) and how to spell their surname. (4) This injustice could then only be rectified AFTER 1900 by the official registration of births, marriages and deaths. (5) However, according to the current policy the poor individuals on "Project Profiles" have unfortunately to stick to their incorrect LNAB according to their baptismal records. (6) As far as South Africa is concerned those early LNAB’s before 1900 are only of academic value and nothing more than that. (7) Therefore, my suggestion is to use the generally accepted spelling of surnames (LNAB) as explained above in point (1) and rather mention the wrong spellings under BIOGRAPHY on the profile.
