Biography

Name: Isaac /Gandovin [1]
Birth Date: 1671 in Henrico Co. (became Goochland in 1728), Virginia [2]

Isaac Gandovin was born between 1668 and 1671 in Henrico County, in the English colony of Virginia. His parents were Isaac Gandovin (aka Godwin or Godvin), who was most-likely born about 1645 in Nantes, Loire-Atlantique, France, and his wife, Ann (Bondurant) Gandovin, b: ca. 1650 in Henrico Co., Virginia.[3]

His father was a French Huguenot (Protestant) who had fled his homeland due to the increasing 17th Century religious persecution sponsored by the French monarchy under Roman Catholic King Louis XIV. His mother, although born in Virginia, was also from a French Huguenot family.[4]

Although the Gandovin / Godwin family were not part of the original 5 shiploads of Huguenot immigrants that founded Manakin Towne north-west of the Falls of the James River, Henrico (Goochland in 1728) Co., Virginia in 1700-1701, they had close ties with that French Protestant community. Even though most vital records have been lost, it seems that around 1695, Isaac Gandovin (Godwin) married Mary Ann Pleasant, b: about 1675 in Henrico County, Virginia. Her name indicates she was of English heritage. The couple lived in King William Parish, which included Manakin Towne, Goochland County, Virginia, and had 3 daughters:[5]

  1. Cecilia Ann Gandovin (aka Godwin), b: ca. 1698 in Henrico Co.
  2. Judith Godwin (aka Gandovin), b: ca. 1708 in Henrico Co. VA
  3. Marie Gaudwin (aka Gandovin), b: ca. 1720 in Henrico County (became Goochland in 1728), English Colony of Virginia https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gaudwin-2

Isaac Gandovin / Godwin died in March 1754 in King William Parish, Cumberland County, English Colony of Virginia. His wife predeceased him, dying in 1751, on their plantation near the upper James River, in Virginia.[6]

  3. Goochland County was formed from Henrico Co., in 1728; Goochland was later divided & Cumberland County was formed in 1749. Thus, in a single lifetime, many people lived in 3 different counties, always owning the same property.

Godwin-1387 and Gandovin-3 appear to represent the same person because: identical biographies

Gandovin-5 and Pleasant-30 are the true parents to Gandovin-2. Gandovin-2 needs to be merged with Godwin-1386 and Gandovin-6 (the daughter). Godwin-1387 and Gandovin-3 needs to be merged with Gandovin-5 (the father). Hall-11054 and Pleasant-208 needs to be merged with Pleasant-30 (the mother). I'm adding this to all six profiles until this is resolved.

Godwin-555 and Gandovin-5 appear to represent the same person because: same birth information; Gandovin was original surname in France; changed to Godwin as a Huguenot emigrant to Virginia in 1680 - 1700 period. 1751 was the death year for his wife; he died in March 1754.
