Biography

Moses Guest married Mary Jane Blair in 1772 and they had fourteen children: Morgan b.1773, William b.1775, Elizabeth b.1776, Mary b. 1779, Moses b.1781, John b.1783, Celia b.1785, Colbert b.1785, Nathaniel b.1790, Anne b.1792, Barton b.1794, Cynthia b.1796, Sanford b.1799, and Susannah b.1802. After the death of his first wife, Mary Jane (d.1827), he married Eleandor York in 1829. They had one son, Joseph Flint Guest b.1830. The source for 15 children is the Moses Guest Bible, Georgia Archives.

During 1775 Moses Guest served in the Cherokee Indian War. In 1776 he began service in the Revolutionary War; his activities were focused principally in North and South Carolina. In 1776, 77, 78 and 79, he served as Captain in Colonel Cleveland's North Carolina Regiment. In 1780 he served as Captain in the Battle of Kings Mountain. In 1782 he was commissioned Captain of a company of Wilkes County North Carolina Militia. Known battles/skirmishes: Cherokee Expedition 1776; Kings Mountain, SC 1780; and Boyd's Creek, TN 1780. Many historians consider the Battle of Kings Mountain on 10/07/1780 to be the turning point in the war for independence. The victory of the American patriots over the British loyalist troops completely destroyed the left wing of Cornwallis' army. The Wilkes County Regiment of Militia (NC) was led by Col. Benjamin Cleveland.

Thanks to biography on the Grave Index from Dennis York: The Moses Guest monument is located in northern Franklin County, directions; About 7 miles south of Toccoa on Ga Hwy 106, turn west on Ga Hwy 63. This intersection is located just north of where Ga Hwy 320 intersects with Ga Hwy 106. Travel west on Ga Hwy 63 (Sunshine Methodist Church Road) toward I-85 probably 3 or 4 miles past a large metal building on the right (Taylor moding shop), there is an old house on the left and cemetery is across the road on right up on a bank just at the edge of the road right-of-way. There is a fence behind it and a gate just below it but the cemetery is outside the fence. For people traveling I-85 north from Atlanta, go past the Banks Crossing (US441 & I-85) to the Martin Bridge Road Exit, Ga Hwy 63 and turn north, travel toward Toccoa watching for crossings and turns, and the cemetery is on the left across the road from the old Guest place. The cemetery was re-dedicated recently by the SAR.

From descendant Dennis York's family research: "After the death of his first wife in 1827 Moses, age 80 married a second time on 08 May 1829 in Franklin County, Georgia, to Eleandor "Nelly" Ruth York, age 40. She was born in 1789 in Randolph County, North Carolina, USA and died on 24 May 1866 in Dawson County, Georgia. She is a first Cousin 5 times removed of Dennis York, FAG #474056052. Moses and Eleandor had one child, John Flint Guest born on 07 Sep 1830 in Franklin County, Georgia. John Married Temperance Ann Roper and had one child Elizabeth GUESS, born on march 1852 in Dawson County, Georgia, USA. I believe my ancester Sarah Guest (Guest-384) is the grand-daughter of Moses Guest. The only info that I have is from searches on the internet. Did Moses Guest have a son William Guest? Do you plan to list more of his children so I can eventually link up to this family?
