Biography

Samuel was a Friend (Quaker)
U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Samuel Hopkins was a Maryland colonist.

Samuel Hopkins was the fourth son of Gerrard Hopkins and Margaret Johns. His birth was recorded in the meeting minutes of the West River Quaker Church on the 16th day of the 11th month 1713.[1]

Although Samuel Hopkins inherited land in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, he lived in Baltimore County. On July 2, 1740, Hopkins was married to Sarah Giles, the daughter of John Giles Junior. This marriage was recorded at the Gunpowder Monthly Meeting Quaker Church in Baltimore County, Maryland. The couple had ten known children.

There is some evidence that Samuel sent at least three of his sons to Philadelphia to apprentice for trades. His eldest son, Gerrard Hopkins, was apprenticed to a furniture maker in Philadelphia. Another son, Philip Hopkins, was apprenticed to a hat maker in Philadelphia. A third son, Samuel Hopkins Junior, was indentured to a tradesman named John Parish of Philadelphia in 1761.

Samuel Hopkins's will was proved in 1767 at Baltimore County, Maryland.[2]
