Biography

Nicholas was the son of Johann Michael Köppel (1697-1764) and Anna Elisabetha (Bentz) Köppel (1707-1750). [1]

He was baptized on February 28, 1724 at the Lutheran Church in Herbitzheim. Alsace His baptismal sponsors were: "Nickel Hemmerth (Smith at Dehlingen), Joh. Adam Erdter, and Catharina Hausswald (single)".[1]

Nicholas travelled to the American colony with his father and brother Jacob on board the Phoenix in 1749[1], settling first in Berks County, Pennsylvania and later in Westmoreland County.

Nicholas married Maria Williams in 1756 in Tohickon Union Reformed Church, Bucks, Pennsylvania.[2] [3]

In October 1760, Jürg Peter, child of Johann Nicolaus & Anna Maria, was born and baptised at the age of 8 weeks on 21 December 1760 in Berks County by Lutheran minister Daniel Schumacher[4]

in 1765, Nicolaus and Anna Maria were recorded in the records of the Emmanuael Lutheran Church in Emmanuelsville, Northampton, Pennsylvania, United States.[5]. His brother Jacob and his wife Eleanor are also listed.

In 1767, their son Georg Nickolaus was born in Lehigh and baptised by Schumacher. In 1771, their daughter Naemi was born in Lehigh and also baptised by Schumacher.[6]

In 1777, Nicholas acquired land from Samual McKee in Westmoreland County. [7] and he can be found there in 1790[8]. In his household are recorded 2 males over 16, 2 males under 16 and 3 females. In 1800, he is still in Hempfield[9] and iin his household are recorded 3 males 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 male 45 and over, 1 female 16-25 and 1 female 45 and over. This would seem to suggest that his wife is still living at this time.

Nicholas died about 1804 and is buried in Old Trout Farm Cemetery in Westmoreland County. [10]

His wife, listed only as Widow Kepple can be found in the 1810 census, living with another female aged 16-25. Other Kepples are listed on the same page with her, including Peter, George, Henry, Michael and Ludwick.[11]

Nicholas Kepple died intestate, according to an 1820 deed petition in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania[7] that year made by his son Michael Kepple to partition the land of his deceased father.

Research Notes

There appear to be two men with similar names who have been conflated in various online trees and WikiTree profiles..

This Nicholas was born in Herbetzheim, Alsace in 1724 and settled in Pennsylvania and died sometime before 1814 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

The other, Johan Nicolas Copple (abt.1735-aft.1807) was born in 1835 in Germany, settled first in Maryland and then died in North Carolina in 1807. I have removed the incorrect death date of 15 Dec 1807 from this profile as this is the date of the will of the North Carolina Nicolas Copple.Patterson-15268

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nicholas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nicholas:
