Biography

Paul, or Paulus, may have been born in Switzerland[1] or Germany, but he was certainly part of the Palatinate Migration to the New World.

He was recorded as "Paulus Lingel", along with Johann Jacob Lingel aboard the Saint Andrew Galley, which arrived 26 September 1737 from Rotterdam, via Cowes, England.[2] With him was his wife, Catherine.

Bockstruck notes in his Denizations and Naturalizations in the British Colonies in America, 1607-1775 that Paul was naturalized in Berks County, Pennsylvania 10-12 April 1762.[3]

Received a warrant for purchase of 150 acres in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on 28 June 1738.[4]

Received a warrant for purchase of 191 acres in Lancaster County, on 28 October 1772.[5]

The 1781 Tax and Exoneration list of Tulpehocken lists Paul Lengel holding 17 acres and 3 cows, for which he was taxed 84.1.15[6] And he was listed, along with his wife and older sons, as a communicant at the Hetzel, or Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1783.[7]

His will was recorded in English on 1 April 1786 in Tulpehocken, and provides a wealth of information. In it, he names his wife, Catherine, and the following children (placed in order according to Runk)[1]:

  • John (eldest son)
  • Frederick
  • Jacob (co-executor)
  • Martin
  • Nicholas
  • Thomas
  • Ann Mary (wife of Jacob Scholl)
  • Conrad
  • Stephen (co-executor)
  • Simon
  • Caspar (youngest son)[8]

His estate was probated 28 June 1786 in Berks County.[8] As he was a member of the church in Pine Grove, it is possible that he was interred there, but there is no record. While the Find a Grave memorial does not list a specific burial place, the memorial itself asserts that he was buried at Wenrich's Church in Linglestown.[9]

Research Notes

  • Runk et. al. in their Commemorative biographical encyclopedia of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania claim that Paul was born in Switzerland. They do not provide a source for this assertion.[1] (As does the memorial at Find a Grave.) Most other sources either say that his birthplace is unknown or that he was from "the Palatinate."
  • Trying to determine the birth order of the sons based upon Paul's will is impossible. He names them in various order, only saying that John is the eldest and Caspar is the youngest. He groups them: Nicholas, Simon, Frederick, Conrad; Stephen, Jacob, Frederick, Martin, Caspar; Frederick, Jacob, Martin, Caspar; and Thomas, Stephen, Jacob; and John, Nicholas, Simon, Frederick.
  • I have included the Find A Grave memorial for information purposes, and not as a reliable source.
  • To date, there is no evidence for his wife's LNAB. There is some speculation that it could be Artz or Bennetsch, based on the names of baptismal sponsors and the mention of "my son-in-law Paul Lingel" named in the will of Johannes Artzt, (or John Artz/Arts) of Heidelberg Twp, 11 Apr 1762.

Updated - 3/9/2022 - There appears to be two Paul(us) Lingles, since their DOB is so far apart. More research is needed. Fetterly-28 02:26, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
