Biography

Capt. Daniel Llewellyn was born in Charles City, Virginia.[1] Son of Daniel Llewellyn Sr and his wife Anne.

Daniel's father's immigration was recorded in 1637. Although his birth date and age were unknown, his business activities were very well known, documented through countless deeds and letters. He left a will that begins a trail of descendants that clutter the Virginia swamps in Colonial times and later spreads across the United States as the nation takes shape.

Daniel Sr settled in Charles City Co. He was a planter, a militia captain, a justice of the peace, and a member of the House of Burgesses for Henrico Co. He married Anne, widow of Robert Hallam in 1640. Daniel Jr was born Apr 1647. Through his mother he received 636 acres of land that belonged to his father (land, tenements, & hereditaments in Charles City Co, in the upper part of the James River).

Both Daniel Sr. and Daniel Jr, were militia Captains. The son was married 1694 in Henrico, Colony of Virginia, to Jane Stith.

He died on Thursday, June 19, 1712, in Charles City County, Virginia. His grave is at the Westover Plantation Cemetery, Charles City, Charles City County, Virginia.[1]

Research Notes

Son of Daniel Llewellyn Sr and Anne, his wife, whose maiden name is not known (See "Research Notes" on her profile for a discussion about Baker and Mathews/Matthews).

Since this copy of Daniel's profile was pasted into the Research Notes here, the children attached to his mother's profile have been reviewed and many of the names listed in the following paragraph have changed (or been detached).

Brother of Thomas Price [half], Margaret Elisabeth (Llewellyn) Crewes, Thomas Llewellen [half], Margaret Price [half], Mary Price [half], John Price II [half], Richard Price [half], Sarah (Hallom) Sturdivant [half], Robert Hallom Jr. [half], Ann (Hallom) Gundry [half], Thomas Daniel Llewellyn, Martha (Llewellyn) Jones and Richard Llewellyn note - information outdated

Daniel had two full sisters, who were named in his father's will: Margaret Cruse and Martha Jones. (See his father's profile for a transcription of his 1663/4 will.) Half-siblings, as discussed on his mother's profile, are probably Mary Price and the Hallom children (Robert, Ann, and Sarah). ~ Noland-165, 21 January 2022

These two pieces of data had apparently different sources attached that looked legitimate, but in fact, were one source that applied to completely different people whose names were not even similar to Daniel's. Moreover, the source describes a marriage license rather than a birth and death. The dates and source have been removed from the data section of his profile, but are preserved here, in case they are relevant to someone else.

  5. Although Dorman has Daniel born in 1647 (Dorman, APP 2:850), he had to have been born on or before 15 May 1645 in order to have repatented his father's land on 15 May 1666. To do that, he had to have been "of age" (21).

named as husband of Jane Stith, daughter of John, when John wrote his will 13 November 1690...

Transcription of Charles City County Record Book, 1692-1700. Enter Charles City in the Name box at https://virginiamemory.com/collections/lost (accessed 13 February 2022).

Will of John Stith is in the first section (Transcription of Pages 1-99), starting on page 25 of 100... Dated 13 November 1690, recorded 3 April 1694

  • "John Stith senr." of Westover Parish, Charles City County
  • wife Jane
  • eldest son John
  • son Drury Stith
  • daughter Jane, now wife of Capt David Lluellin [close examination of image - should be Daniel, not David - compare the writer's "d" when at the end of a word to the last letter of his name; also the "n" in Bolling to the "n" in Daniel, which looks very much like a "v". ]
  • daughter Ann, now wife of Mr. Robert Bolling
  • daughter Agnes, now wife of Mr. Thomas Wynn
  • friend Hugh Davis

A codicil dated 3 October 1693 was occasioned by the marriage of his son Drury.

merge completed (without death in France)

Llewellyn-253 and Llewellyn-27 appear to represent the same person because: attached to same parents, same birth location, birth years are close. If Llewellyn-253 died in France (as his profile says), then he is not the son of Daniel and Ann Llewellyn born in Virginia about 1640. Either remove France as death location and merge or detach parents/remove birth info and reject. Thanks!

Deleted Kentucky as birth location since it hadn't been settled by Europeans yet, and The family was living in Charles City, Virginia in 1647.

Changed father from Price to Llewellyn. Ann Matthews was married to John Price, Robert Hallom, then Daniel Llewellyn [Sr.]. Given that Daniel was named for Ann's third husband, I assume that the first husband was not his father.
