Biography

Paul Honoré Melanson was born on 5 December 1724. He was the son of Paul Melanson and Marie Thériot. He was baptized the same day he was born at Saint Charles des Mines, Grand-Pré, Acadia. His godparents were Alexandre de Belisle and Marguerite LeBlanc.[1][2][3]

He married Marie Josèphe Breau around 1748 in Acadie. [4] [3]

  5. Anastasie Osite MELANSON ca 1759-1828
  6. Jean Dominique (Dit Minique) MELANSON ca 1762-1849

The family was residing in Petcoudiac in 1752 with 1 boy and 1 girl. [6] They were recorded again in Petcoudiac in 1755 with 3 boys. [7][4]

They were on a list of prisoners in Halifax dated 12 August 1763. [8][9][3]

The prisoners in Halifax were released after the treaty of 1763. The British authorities permitted Acadians to remain in the Colony of Nova Scotia as long as they took an oath of allegiance. However the majority of the prisoners rejected their offer and left the colony by their own means by leasing vessels since the British refused to pay their passage to other colonies. Many chose to go to French-controlled Saint-Domingue (Haiti) but quickly left the dire conditions there and travelled north, most of them settling in Louisiana in the spring of 1765. It is not known if the Melanson family went to Haiti before arriving in Louisiana or went directly there. [8]

Paul Honoré died between the censuses of 12 Aug 1763 (Halifax) and 9 April 1766 (Cabahannocer), perhaps in present-day Haiti. His wife is a widow on the 9 April 1766 census. [3] [10]

Widow Melançon age 35 on 6 arpents of land, 6 hogs.
Jean Baptiste, son age 11; Jean, son age 4; Marie, daughter age 13; Nastasie, daughter age 7; Joseph Melançon age 15.

Research Notes

The book on Beaubassin censuses by Stephen White mentions that the family was at Camp d'Espérance, after 1755. [4] However, Paul Honoré Melanson is not on the list of Acadians who were at that refugee camp, published by Ronnie-Gilles LeBlanc.[11]

Note: Discrepancy in where he died. Did he die in Halifax while imprisoned during the deportations, on the passage to St. Domingue or after arriving there? We know he wasn't on the 9 April 1766 census in Cabanocey, St. James, LA. with his wife and children.

Melancon-131 and Melanson-438 appear to represent the same person because: Date of birth is close. Melancon-131 was connected to parents Jean Melanson and Marguerite Dugas. No son Honoré listed for this couple in reliable sources. Proposing a merge into Melanson-438 with the closest date of birth, and standard spelling used by Acadians Project.

There is no son Honoré listed for this family in reliable sources (see research notes). This profile should be considered for merging into another profile with the closest date of birth (Paul Honore Melancon (1724-1766)) if no actual evidence is found that this person existed. If anyone does have evidence, please discuss here and include your sources! Thanks.

Melancon-886 and Melanson-438 appear to represent the same person because: Same father, same date and location of birth, same spouse and son Dominique Jean (also duplicates), same estimated date of death.
