Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed John was the son of Robert Page and Lucia Warde. But he was born about 1614 and cannot be the son of Robert Page-175 and Lucia Warde-23 as they would only have been about 10 years old at the time of the birth of John. In addition, Robert and Lucia Page were married in 1629, long after John Page's birth. AND in Robert Page's will he refers to Francis Page, b. 1633, as his eldest son.[1]

A previous version of this profile also claimed, without source, a specific birth date and place of 6 Feb 1614 in Hingham, Norfolk, England. This has been removed.

Biography

Cross of St George
John Page was born in England.
Massachusetts state seal
John Page was an early settler in Massachusetts.

John Page was born in England, probably in Norfolk County, and arrived in Massachusetts about 1635 as a young man.

He was admitted as a freeman in Hingham on 8 October 1640 at the age of 26. [2]

John married Mary Marsh, daughter of George Marsh by 1640 as their first child was baptized at Hingham on July 11, 1641. [3]

In George Marsh's will, written on July 2,1647, he left to his daughter Mary 'Padge' two ewe goats and one kid to each of her four children. [3]

In 1646 John went to Haverhill, Massachusetts where Mary's brother, Onesiphorus Marsh, was settling and obtained a grant of land that year. John's town lot in Haverhill consisted of about 16 acres on Water Street, fronting the River, where he probably had his home. Since he had four children baptized in Hingham after 1646, it seems probable that he did not bring his family to Haverhill until sometime in the 1650s. During this time he no doubt contributed his carpentry skills to the building of Haverhill and travelled frequently to Hingham, where Mary remained and lived near her widowed mother. [2]

John Page took the oath of allegiance at Haverhill on May 9, 1669. [4] Probably he was the John Page, Senior, voted in 1683 regarding the site of a new meeting house.[5][4]

John and Mary Page adopted Abigail Marsh, Mary's niece, in 1685:

"Abigail Marsh b. Hingham Feb. 21, 1671 was the youngest daughter of Onesiphorus Marsh and Hannah (Cutler). Abigail was 15 years of age when her mother died; she was adopted by her Uncle John Page and Aunt Mary (Marsh). Abigail married January 3, 1695 Abiel Mercer b. Dec. 27, 1670 son of Richard and Hannah (Shatswell) Mercer."[6]

John Page died November 23, 1687 at 73 years of age.[7] He is probably buried in the Old Pentucket Cemetery in Haverhill.[4]

It appears that his estate was not administered until 1722, John dying intestate. His grandson Thomas Page was appointed administrator. [8]

The estate was divided into 9 shares, with each person receiving one share except the eldest son who received two shares. Named are:

  • ?Savines Page, eldest son: In Descendants of John Page (1614-1687), p. 171 (online p. 200), it says that "In the division of his (John Page) estate in 1723 his name (Onesiphorus) was written in probate records as Savernes, Saverance and Severance, evidently attempts to represent Siphorus in writing." [4]

  • Joseph Page

  • Cornelius Page

Research notes

  • In 1635, a person named John Page, age 33, was transported to the Bormoodes or Somer-Islands (Bermuda) imbarqued in the Truelove de London, ROBERT DENNIS. John's name is followed by Thomas Jennicom (21) [Jenyson, ...] then Sara Page (31), Sarah Page (3) and Mary Page (3mos). Could perhaps Thomas be a brother of Sarah Page? This John Page would have been born about 1602 if the passenger list is accurate.[9] The age and name does not match this John Page nor the other Great Migration John Page of Watertown.

This record has John Page arriving with a family - a wife and 2 children. How many others named John Page arrived about the same time. It's no wonder we ancestry searchers get confused.

U.S. and Canada, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s Name: John Page Arrival year: 1630 Arrival Place: Massachusetts Primary Immigrant: Page, John Family Members: With wife & 2 children Source Publication Code: 6799.25

There is also a Record for John Page born 6 Feb. 1613 in Hingham, Norfolk, England; parents John Page and mother Phebe Paine.
One of the interesting things about those early Puritan ancestors; they named their children Biblical names - many had heard the names, but probably had never seen them spelled. Onesiphorus is a Greek name and one that would throw most people. O-ne-si-pho-rus means profit-bearer and is found in II Timothy, in chapters 1 & 4

I wonder if he lived up to his name?

If dates of death are correct for John Page's children, only Benjamin was alive when the estate was divided. He would have been about 78. I would think he would have known who was the eldest but maybe not as John and Onesephoris (or whatever name they called him) were only a year apart and had died many years before the estate was settled. Except for Ben, I assume the estate went to the beneficiaries of John's children that are listed in the court record.
I think that's very probable, that by 1722, the grandson didn't know which was eldest. There was probably a hulabaloo of some sort, because he got the most. But it could very easily just have been settled without leaving the record.

I found baptisms in Page Hobart's Journal no parent names, John Page eldest. Maybe in 1722, grandson Thomas just didn't know which 'uncle' was born first? I think John Jr. died before then as well.

I wonder if the will says Savines meaning Onesipherous and spelled very badly!!!

I can't find the birth/baptisms of most of the children except limited names at Haverhill, nothing in Hingham so far.

I think the only sticking point here is the fact that John is named the second son. Onesipherous is a really odd name, and could, I think, have become spelled almost anything including Sacriner or Saviner. If the sons were named in the other order, there would be no question. So yes I think this probate belongs to this John, but there is an error in the children list or the baptisms have been given wrong.

Need help with disciphering, this looks like his estate, not administered until 1722, by grandson Thomas. This page names 8 children as heirs at this time, seem to be the correct descendants, by the married names of the living daughters, and most of the sons names. I don't have a clue as to what the first son's name is? Do you believe this is the correct estate. Other pages list land holdings etc., one page signed by Benjamin names own his sons Abraham and Thomas.
