Porphyre Petitpas, known as Paul or Paulfevre, was born about 1832 at Tracadie, Nova Scotia, to Joseph and Agathe Petitpas (Petitpas-309 and Mattie-29).
Porphyre Petitpas married Margaret Mary Avery (aka Every) ca. 1853 at Tracadie, Nova Scotia. They lived at Mollasses Harbour, later known as Larry's River, where Paul was a Fisherman, and where they had 7 children:
William Paul (Petitpas-335), on 15 November, 1853;
Benjamin (Petitpas-336), on 10 March, 1855;
Paul (Pettipas-29), in March, 1857;
Marie Margaret (Petitpas-337), in February, 1859;
Catherine (Petitpas-338), on 9 May, 1861;
Peter Joseph (Petitpas-339), in 1863; and
Charlotte (Petitpas-340), on 24 December, 1866.
The 1861 Census recorded Porphire Petipas living at Tracadie (Polling District 8, Sydney), Nova Scotia. He was head of a household consisting of 9 people, 5 males and 4 females, but we don't know who they were as they were enumerated by age, not name, so while some of those residents would have been Porphyre and Margaret and their children born before 1861, we don't know who else was living in the household[1].
Margaret Every died of Fever on 22 August, 1867 at Molasses Harbour. Her parents are named on the Registration of Death as Felix Every, Fisherman, and Susanna.
Porphyre Petitpas, 38, Widower, married Angele "Jane" Pelerin (Pelerin-23), 21, Spinster, both of Larry's River (formerly Molasses Harbour) on 6 January, 1870. The Parish record of their marriage confirms his parents were Joseph and Agatha Petitpas, and names Angele's parents as Simon and Gertrude Pelerin[2].
Paul and Jane Petitpas lived at Molasses Harbour/Larry's River (the names seem to have been used interchangeably), Tor Bay, Guysborough, where they had 6 children:
Simon (Petitpas-341), born 21 October, 1870;
Frederick (Petitpas-342), born 16 November, 1872;
Marguerite (Petitpas-343), born 1876;
Thomas Henry (Petitpas-344), born May, 1878;
Gertrude (Petitpas-345), born 9 November, 1880; and
John M. (Petitpas-346),born 24 April, 1884.
At the time of the 1871 Census, Paulfere, 40, Fisherman, and Jane Petipas, 22, were living at Molasses Harbour, Guysborough, Nova Scotia, with their children William, 16, Benjamin, 14, Paulfere, 12, Peter, 8, Simon, 0 (less than 1 year), Mary, 10, Catherine, 6, and Charlotte, 4[3]. All members of the household were born in Nova Scotia, of French origin, and Catholic. This Census recorded that neither Paulfere or Jane could read or write.
The 1881 Census of Larry's River recorded Paulfeve, 49, Fisherman, and Jane Petitpas, 32, living with their children Peter, 16, also a Fisherman, Simon, 11, Frederick, 8, Thomas, 3, Charlotte, 15, Margaret, 5, and Harriet (Gertrude?), 4 months, still at Larry's River, Guysborough, Nova Scotia[4].
The 1891 Census recorded Paulfer, 61, still fishing, and Jane Petitpas, 42, and their children Simon, 20, Seaman, Frederick, 18, Fisherman, Margaret, 16, Thomas M., 14, Jane (Gertrude?), 12, and John M., 7, living at Larry's River[5].
In 1901, Pauth, 69, and Jane Pettipaws, 51, and their children Simon, 29, "Tohomes," 21 (Thomas), Gertey, 20, and John M., 16, were again recorded at Larry's River, where "Pauth" and sons Simon and Tohomes were Fishermen[6].
The 1911 Census recorded Paul, 85, born September, 1826, labourer and Jane Petipas, 62, born March, 1849, and son John, 28, born April, 1883, both of no occupation, still living at Larry's River, Guysborough, Nova Scotia[7].
Paul Pettipaues died at Larry's River, Guysborough, Nova Scotia "of old age" on 9 February, 1913 and was buried in Saint Peter's Church Cemetery there[8][9].
