Biography

Rhemy was born on 12 May, 1841 (according to the 1901 Census), likely at Molasses Harbour, Guysborough, Nova Scotia, to Joseph and Agathe Petitpas (Petitpas-309 and Mattie-29).

At the time of the 1871 Census, Remy, 30, Fisherman, was living at Molasses Harbour Polling District No. 11 with his mother Agathia, 64, Widow, and brother Hanery, 25, also a Fisherman, and Hanery's wife Elizabeth, 19[1]. This Census records that Remi could neither read nor write.

Remi Petitpas, 27, Bachelor, Fisherman, born at Tracadie, son of Joseph Petitpas, Farmer, and Agatha Munier, married Adelaide L'Avandier, 30, Spinster, born at Tracadie, daughter of Frederick L'Avandier, Farmer, and Mary Coste, at Torbay, Guysborough, Nova Scotia, on 8 January, 1872, by Banns[2]. Witnesses were Joseph Petitpas and Annette Pelerin, and Rev. F. von Blerk officiated the R. Catholic ceremony.

Rhemy and Adelaide had at least 2 children:

  • Joseph (Petitpas-490), born ca. 1886; and
  • Barnard (Petitpas-489), born 10 May, 1887.

The 1881 Census recorded Delia and Remi Petitpas, Fisherman, both 30, living at Larry's River, Guysborough, Nova Scotia, with Remi's brother Louis, 36, also a Fisherman, and his wife Charlotte, 25, and their children Mary, 13, Abraham, 11, Maggie, 9, Elizabeth, 5, and Nancy, 6[3].

The 1891 Census recorded Dellide, 44 and Jerry Pettipas, 45, Fisherman, and their children Joseph, 3, and Barny, 2, living at Larry's River, Guysborough, Nova Scotia[4].

The 1901 Census recorded Delia, 60, born 10 June, 1840, and Jerrimia Pettipas, 59, born 12 May, 1841, and their son Barnie, 13, born 10 May, 1887, living at Larry's River, Guysborough, Nova Scotia[5].

Remi was widowed on 17 April, 1909.

The 1911 Census of Canada recorded Remme Petitpas, 72, born September 1838, Widowed, Farm Labourer, living in his own home at Larry's River, Guysborough, Nova Scotia[6].

The 1921 Census recorded Remi Petitpas, 80 (the 8 was mistaken for a 3 when data entry was done for the search engine, so he's "30" on the Census Search), Widowed, living in the home of Benjamin Girouard. Remi's relationship to the head of house is illegible[7].

Remie Petitpas died on 16 March, 1923 at the age of 82 years, 10 months, and 3 days, at Larry's River, Guysborough, Nova Scotia and was buried in St. Peter's Church Cemetery there[8][9].
