Biography

Narcissa (Pierce) Hopson was an Ohioan.

Narcissa Pierce was born on May 1, 1801 in Marietta, Washington, Northwest Territory (Ohio), daughter of William Pierce (1766–~1814) and Lois Thomas (1767–1826).

Marriage and Family
Narcissa (13) married Robert Hopson (19) (born on October 17, 1795 in Hoosick, Rensselaer, New York, United States; son of Simeon Hopson and Elizabeth (Lottridge) Hopson) in 1815 in Athens, Ohio. She and two of her sisters, Anna and Sophronia, would all marry Hopson brothers.

Their children were:

  1. Elizabeth Jane Hopson (1816–1861)[1]
  2. Lucy Hopson (1818–1861)[2]
  3. Delilah Hopson (1821–1898)[3]
  4. Diana Allana Hopson (1825–1885)[4]
  5. Katharine Hopson (<1826–1828)

  12. Lois Thomas Pierce Hopson (1844–1917)[11]
  13. Emeline Hopson (1846–1936)[12]

Disputed Child
Joseph Selkuk Hopson (1833–1912)[13] appears as a child of Robert and Narcissa Hopson on the 1850 census, but it says Joseph was born in Missouri. All of Robert and Narcissa's children were born either in Ohio or Illinois. He does not fit with the number of boys on the 1840 census with the family. He is also not listed in Robert Hopson's will amongst his other 'siblings'. He could be a nephew of Robert. We do have a couple of DNA matches to his descendants.

I'm wondering if he is a nephew of Robert as we do have a couple of DNA matches to him.

Research Notes

Narcissa's parentage, along with her two sisters, Sophronia and Anna, has been in question for years. Over the years, people have 'assumed' the sisters belonged to Enoch Pierce and his first wife, Molly Snow; Enoch Pierce and his second wife, Experience Storrs and/or Jonathan Pierce and Abigail Prescott. But our DNA NEVER matched. All three Pierce sisters married a set of Hopson brothers in Athens, Ohio within a few years of each other. Another man named, Nathaniel Pierce, also married in Athens, Ohio around this time and who after further study was determined to be the son of William Pierce and Lois (Thomas) Pierce. When I did my DNA in 2012 with Ancestry, this was one line I was hoping to solve. 10 years later, as more and more people have submitted their DNA, the brick wall began to crumble until it finally revealed the truth. Sophronia, Anna and Narcissa Pierce, were in fact, the daughters of William Pierce and Lois (Thomas) Pierce. Our DNA matches the other children of William and Lois as well as their siblings a generation up.

Narcissa's birth year has always been listed as 1804 but I find it hard to believe that she would be married at the age of 11 and have her first child at age 12. I have found one source that listed 1801 as her birth year and I can fathom age 14 over 11 for marriage and 15 instead of 12 for the first child.

Joseph Hopson appears on the 1850 census as a child of Robert and Narcissa, but he was born in Missouri (all of Robert and Narcissa's children were born in Ohio or Illinois). I believe he is a nephew of Robert Hopson. We do have a couple of DNA matches to his descendants. He is not listed in Robert's will with his other children.
