[1]Allan Pinkerton was born in Scotland, he started the Pinkerton National Detective Agency.The Agency caption was We never sleep.In 1861–1862 he stopped an assassination plot while protecting Abraham Lincoln.[2] He was also a spy for the Union Army in the American Civil War,and wrote a book on the subject [3]called A Spy for the Rebellion.

Allan Pinkerton was born on[4]August 21, 1819 in Glasgow, Scotland, his parents were William Pinkerton and Isobel McQueen. William Pinkerton was an policeman, who was removed from active service, after an injury he received while on duty. He died after being injured in a political riot in Glasgow, and Allan Pinkerton left school to help support his family.

Allan Pinkerton and Joan Carfrae eloped in Glasgow on 13 March 1842.That same year Allan and Joan Pinkerton and his mother Isobel, emigrated to the United States. He left Scotland because there was a warrant out for his arrest, because of his political activities.He and his brother Robert were involved in the[5]. Newport Rising of 1839 . They arrived in Chicago and in 1843,leaving Joan in Chicago, he moved to Dundee, Illinois, where he built a cabin after the cabin was finished,he sent for Joan.In 1844,Allan Pinkerton started working for Chicago Abolitionist leaders.[6]He started a barrel making shop ,a trade he learned in Scotland,his shop was one of the stops on the Underground Railroad.

On their 1842 wedding day to Joan Carfrae, Pinkerton and his bride boarded a ship for the United States just ahead of soldiers holding a warrant for his arrest based on his political activities. Upon his arrival in the US, he settled in Dundee, Illinois. In 1849, Pinkerton was appointed as the first detective in Chicago.

Allan Pinkerton was the first detective in Chicago in 1849. He and Edward Rucker a Chicago attorney,formed the North Western Police Agency in 1850. This was later called Pinkerton&Co, and than Pinkerton National Detective Agency.[7]The Agency's insignia was a wide open eye with the caption We never sleep. One of the agency's job, was to solve a series of train robberies during the 1850s, this is when Allan Pinkerton first met [8]George McClellan, Vice President of the Illinois Central Railroad, and[9]Abraham Lincoln, who was the lawyer for the Railroad.

Allan Pinkerton served in the Union Army,[10]he was head of the Union Intelligence Service froim 1861–1862, while guarding Abraham Lincoln in Baltimore, Maryland he stopped a assassination plot,on Lincoln's life.[11] Allan Pinkerton had his agents work undercover as Confederate soldiers and sympathizers,[12]to gather military intelligence. He used the alias of Major E.J. Allen in a number of undercover missions. After the war Allan Pinkerton went back to his Detective Agency and continued pursing train robbers, mainly the[13]Reno Gang and [14] Jesse James. He was hired by the railroad companies to track down James, but when Allan Pinkerton failed to capture him, the railroad no longer gave him their financial support. He continued to chase Jesse James but at his own own expense.Allan Pinkerton gave up looking for Jesse James, after he captured and killed one of the Pinkerton's undercover agents.

Allan Pinkerton work with his agency until[15] he died in Chicago on July 1, 1884,he is buried in Graceland Cemetery.At the time of his death, he was working on a system that would centralize all criminal identification records, a database now maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.His sons William and Robert took over the running of the Pinkerton Detective Agency.Allan Pinkerton is a[16] member of the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame,the agency still exists today but under a different name, Pinkerton's Inc. [17]
