Biography

Martin Benony Pitre is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana Plaque 12 Right 'La Caroline" Arrivee le 12 Decembre 1785. Listed with Martin is Joseph Hebert, his brother and Marie Hebert, his sister. They were the children of Martin's mother's 1st husband so half siblings.[1]

Martin Benoni Pitre was born on May 06, 1767 in Ille Et Vilaine, France and baptised at St. Suliac. His parents were Paul Hypolite Pitre and Marguerite Louise Valet. [2][3]

Martin Belloni PITRE, born 6 May 1767 at St. Malo, France, son of Paul Hypolite & Marguerite Louise VALET, came to LA in 1785 as a carpenter.

Martin emigrated to Louisiana from France debarking from La Caroline" on 17 Dec 1785 at the Port of New Orleans.[4][5]

As with many other Acadians who arrived in New Orleans, Martin stayed there while tending to personal matters, not the least of which was finding a spouse. He married Jeanne Dantin on January 21, 1786 at St. Louis Church in New Orleans.[6] They settled in Lafourche where they are enumerated by Spanish officials on the census of 1788.[7] 33

Text: Martin PITRE, age 20, living with his wife Jeanne DANTIN, 19, Joseph his brother, 15, and his sister Marie, 12 in household of 4 persons. They have 6 arpents of land, 30 quarts of corn, 1 head cattle, and 4 hogs.

In 1795, Martin, age 28 and Juana Dantin, age 28 have a daughter Felicitas, age 3.[7]
