Biography

Margaret was referred to as deceased wife Margaret, in the will of her husband, Jeremiah Meacham, dated 1694.[1] Her birth of 1620 is estimated from the birth of their second son Isaac about 1643. Her birthplace is probably England since there were no settlers in New England prior to the Mayflower in 1620.

There are many FamilySearch trees where Margaret is listed as being born in Somerset England, perhaps to John Brown and Dorothy Beauchamp ( or perhaps Dorothy Kent).[citation needed]

Online trees claim that Jeremiah Meacham married Margaret Prisse in 1640 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. We seek a better source for this marriage and her maiden name.

Children:

  1. Jeremiah Meacham
  2. Isaac Meacham, born about 1643 in Salem. Isaac's will, dated 1 Aug 1704 (proved 1715) called him husbandman, aged 61, so born about 1643.[2]
  3. John Meacham
  4. Sarah Meacham
  5. Hannah Meacham
  6. Bethia Meacham
  7. John Machen
  8. Rebecca Meacham
  9. Rhoda Meacham

1. FamilySearch. [1] [2] Mrs. Margaret Meacham, born 1620 of Salem, Mass. Died in 1679 in Salem. Married Jeremiah Meacham in 1640.

2. FamilySearch. [3] [4] Mrs. Margaret Meacham, born 1620 in Salem, Mass.

3. FamilySearch. [5] Margaret Prisse, born in 1620 in Salem, Mass, married Jeremiah Meacham in 1640 in Salem, Mass. At least 10 children are listed.

4. FamilySearch. [6] There are many FamilySearch trees that include Margaret Prisse, but this is one that lists her parents, Worshipful Brown (1557) and Joan Sayer. This source has Margaret being born 1617/1620 in England. Husband: Jeremiah Meacham.

5. FamilySearch. [7] [8] Margaret Prisse, born 1620 in Salem. Parents: John Brown (b:1584 in Suffolk England, d:1662 in Mass) and Dorothy Beauchamp (1584-1674).

6. FamilySearch. [9] This has her parents as John Abraham Browne, born 1601 in Suffolk England, died 1662 in Mass; Margaret or Dorothy, born 1584 in Somerset, England, died 1674 in Mass. 6 children listed.

7. FamilySearch. [10] [11] These have Margaret born in 1620 of Somerset, England, died 1679 in Salem. There are many other FamilySearch trees with Somerset as her birth area.

8 Geni. [12] Margaret Meacham, AKA "Prisse", born ca 1620 in Salem, Mass, died 16Apr1679 in Salem. Wife of Jeremiah Meacham, mother of 6 listed children.

9. Geni. [13] Margaret Meacham, died 1679 in Salem, Mass. Daughter of Ambrose Meacham (father of Jeremiah I) and Ursula Perrie. Wife of Jeremiah Meacham I (first to come to USA). There are two MyHeritage sources referenced here. However, since Ambrose was born in 1567 and Urula in 1569, it seems very unlikely that our Margaret is their daughter. Ursula would have been around 50 years old.

? Prisse - should be unknown. Named Margaret in Jeremiah's will.

This profile cites U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 as a source for Prisse. There are several entries for Jeremiah Meacham in this database. Three list his second wife Alice Dutch. Five list just Margaret. One lists Margaret Prisse. Are there any objections to renameing her Margaret Unknown?

Can a leader please ppp this profile since she has disputed origins?

Also, the profile is littered with family trees. Would be great to replace them with better sources.

Done. Thanks, Jillaine. Will the PMs and those on the trusted list for this profile please add some reliable sources?

Prisse-5 and Prisse-1 appear to represent the same person because: same death and husband, birth is an estimate on both profiles.

There are many FamilySearch sources that claim Margaret was the daughter of John Browne, or John Brown, or Worshipful Brown. It's not clear who he was, so now parents should be listed yet.

It is clear that Margaret could not have been born in Salem in 1620, since Salem was founded in 1626. There are many FamilySearch sources that claim she was born in Somerset England, so I have changed her place of birth to Somerset.

I have removed John Browne as father of Margaert.

I can find no evidence that Margaret Prisse was a daughter of John Browne. I would like to disconnect her from Brown.
