Biography

John, (V) John (4),_son of John (3) Rathbun, was born December 29, 1693. at Block Island. He settled at Escoheag, Exeter county, Rhode Island. By the will of his grandfather, he was given sixty acres of land with a house thereon on Block Island. He was admitted freeman, 1732. of New Shoreham, 1734, of Exeter, Rhode Island, 1744. His will was dated January 18, 1752, proved March 10, 1752.

In 1723, John was left from his parents all their housing and land on Block Island. He sold this land in 1725 and moved to the mainland. He was admitted a freeman of North Kingstown in May of 1732.He was called "John Rathbun of Nesquaheague." His will was written Jan. 18, 1752, and probated in Exeter, Rhode Island on March 10, 1752. New data in 1984 changed the mother of John's children. John D. Bowen, a descendant, found the new information in land records in early Exeter, RI (the North Kingstown, RI).By 1731, land records indicates the wife of John as Alice. Patience, no doubt, had died by that time leaving a son, Joshua. In the will of John Fish (father of Patience) he left fifty pounds to "my grandson Joshua Rathbun, son of my daughter, Patience, deceased." Thus, Patience is now listed as the mother of only Joshua who died prior to 1741 when John had a second son named Joshua.

New info (not that new from 1984)- apparently Patience died after her first and only child, Joshua, b after 1720, D before 1741 when Joshua (2) is born) who is mentioned in his grandfather's will in 1731, as "son of my deceased daughter, Patience"
There appears to be a problem with John's wedding date to Alice. Patience's death date is shown as in 1742, and she was still having children when Anna was born in 1739. I doubt that he married Alice in 1722.
