He passed away in 1869 aged 72 years old.

Birth

Baptized 6 April 1800, Jan Hendrik Robbertse was the son of Jan Hendrik Robbertse and Hilletje Magdalena de Beer. Witnesses: Jan Hendrik Robbertse ___ , Geertruy Jacoba van der Linde, Gerrit Robberts, Rachel Potgieter, Johan Hendrik Bakmeier, Cornelia Nel[1]

Marriage

8 March 1818 Graaff- Reinet, Hendrik Robbertse and Hester Maria van Nieuwkerk [2]

Death

His death notice[3] was filled out by somebody who did not know some important details, and with imperfect spelling:

  • Filed on 23 Sept 1869, No 5561
  • Name:Johannes Hendrik Roberts
  • Birthplace, Parents: .. not given
  • Age: 72 years
  • Occupation:Farmer
  • Marriage status:Married. (with whom?)
  • Day of death: 3rd August 1869
  • Place of death: at Reit Poort district Cradock
  • Names of children (all majors):
  • Daniel Jacobus
  • Cornelius Johannes
  • Hester Maria
  • Children of the first marriage (referring to previous 3?)
  • Johannes Hendrik Francois
  • Anna Elisabeth Cornelia Johanna
  • Gert Johannes
  • Magdalena Maria
  • Ferdinantus Wilhelmus Adrijan
  • Gertruida Jacoba
  • Joseph Stephanus Christiaan
  • Property:the deceased being insolvent. but it is expected that his Estate will be solvent and that there will be a Surplus in his Estate the property mentioned in his Will was sold in his insolvent Estate
  • Signed: M.C. Robbertz, wife of the deceased

The location of Reit Poort is most likely a misspelling of Riet Poort. The signature shows that his wife Magdalena Catharina van der Linde survived him. Her death date is still unknown (previously mixed up with death date of another Magdalene Catharina van der Linde).

Research Notes

  1. An unrelated side observation: Witness at baptism Johan Hendrik Bakmeier is possibly recorded on "Index to names of slave proprietors at the COGH 31.12.1826" [4]
  2. The postulation by Van_der_Bank-9 regarding his possible death refers to Retief-64 and https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=33727086. [5]

There is are two different profiles for Magdalena Catharina van der Linde, married to different men, but with (nearly) the same birth and death.

1. Van_der_Linde-152 married to Olivier-985 2. Van_der_Linde-492, married to Robbertze-29 on familysearch https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LZZF-9JN

There are two possibilities:

1: the two women are the same, and they married both men. A quick look says this incompatible.. but maybe it works.

2: the two women are different, but then we run the risk of mixing up the birth and death information.

Conclusion: this needs to be resolved. Either they should be merged, or they need to be carefully disentangled. Right now I see that the Death Notice is used in both scenarios (only via familysearch)

Robbertze-29 and Robbertse-119 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplication. which LNAB correct?
