[On the home of Cecil Joseph Roth, Sr. and Maude Elizabeth (Mulligan) Roth] [--By Jennifer (Roth) Roberts – 1992 –] (From Jennifer’s response to the “Question of the Month” in “ Our Readers Reply” of the Tri-County Electric magazine--describe a house you once lived in or visited and a special memory – or memories – it still holds for you.) The only home I can remember growing up in was a huge, white stucco house with rental apartments in the basement and a sleeping room upstairs. We had a fishing bait and tackle business and a second hand store in our garage. (Our cars begrudgingly sat outside – rain or shine.) On holidays, my two older sisters and brother would pile home with their families and the sturdy old house would rock with our laughter. I remember the first time that my mother ran through the house tossing penny candy from her big, steel mixing bowl and chuckling, “Happy Easter! Come and get it!” The enchanted faces of us scrambling children will remain with me always. My mother lived for these visits, to gather her children, her mother and her dear sister to celebrate the seasons. Dad was generous, too. Many times I’d see him giving bait or candy to the children in wheelchairs who’d stop by on the way to their secret fishing spots. Our home by the highway was a resting point for weary travelers on foot. Mother would never send them away without a huge sack lunch and some hot coffee. Years later my brother and I wondered if the hobos hadn’t left a “Welcome – Food!” sign on the curbside. My parents are gone now, but the house still stands. When I see it, I can imagine my mud pies lining its porch steps and my parents dodging them, as they run outside to wait on a customer.
[This residence is still standing today, March 7, 2018: 604 - 5th Street NW; Jamestown, ND 58401. Maude, Cecil Sr., Elizabeth, Barbara, Cecil Jr., and Jennifer moved to this residence from Windsor, ND, in 1956. I (Cecil Jr.) remember Jennifer just walking when we moved there. She could walk stock upright under the pink kitchen table. After making it our home for many years, Maude passed away in 1983 and probably it was too much for Cecil Sr. to live in that rambling house alone. So, he moved to an apartment not long afterwards, where he would later pass in 1987. But, as Jennifer aptly put to words, there was a lot of simple love shared by the family members in the house on Fifth Street throughout all those years the Roth Family was there. -- Bottom annotation written by Cecil J. Roth, Jr.]
