John Southern was a Jamestown colonist.

John Southerne[1]

John Southern, gentleman, was born 1601 at Tichfield, Fareham Borough, Hampshire, England, the son of William and Louise "Lou" Kincaide Southern.[citation needed]

John was an experienced artisan, sent to Jamestorwn by the Society of Southampton Hundred to take charge of the plantation they intended to develop. He took with him the men and equipment needed to erect an ironworks at Southampton Hundred.[2]

He arrived in Jamestown in 1620 on the ship George.[3] Upon his arrival, the governor sent John to Falling Creek, where he was wounded. He still urged colony officials to support the building of an ironworks.[2]

On 16 Feb 1624, John was living within the corporation of James City.[4] When the 1624/25 census was taken, he was still there, in a household that included his manservant.[5]

John was eduacated and respected, so he was called upon to serve as an attorney, juror, and administrator, sometimes inventorying estates or testifying as a witness.[2] He was elected a burgess for James City in 1624, 1629-1630, and 1632.[6][7] For a time, he served as acting secretary of the colony.[8]

He was a landowner, with James City property in urban Jamestown and below Blunt Point.

  • 1626: 40 acres in James City, below Blunt Point[9]
  • 1 Nov 1627: 24 acres in James City[10]

He married about 1640, Memory Tucker the daughter of Captain William and Mary Thompson Tucker.[citation needed]

John Stockton passed away after 1652, when he is listed as a landowner in the Jamestowne Society records.[6]

Research Notes

The profile for William Southern had, for several years, a profile attached for a son Henry. There is no documentation to prove Henry's existence. The combined birth date and birth location of Henry (1603, Lynhaven River, Lower Norfolk, Virginia) is impossible. The earliest settlement in Jamestown was in 1607. Norfolk, Lower Norfolk and Upper Norfolk did not exist prior to 1636. A search of genealogy websites, early colonial records, etc., turns up no mention of a Henry Southern in Virginia Colony prior to 1675. I suggest this person never existed. (Strutton-11 15:16, 17 April 2021 (UTC)) Side note: Henry's profile was created in 2011. Since then 6 WikiTree members have adopted and then orphaned it and none of them made any changes or added any information. And I don't blame them; no information for Henry exists. Henry's profile was merged with "brother" John's on 21 April 2021.

John was born about 1610. He passed away about 1695. [11]

Sothern-41 and Southern-23 are not ready to be merged because: Possibly intended to be same person; similar birth date, same birth place; research needed to confirm.
Sothern-41 and Southern-23 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same places. Sothern-41is unlinked and essentially empty. Use data from Southern-41

Nothing to support that William has a son "Henry" has been found, as noted in Research Notes on Henry's profile (Southern-23). Instead of taking the next step toward Disproven Existence, Henry's profile will be merged away into this one, for "brother" John, if no objections.

Southern-425 and Southern-458 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same immigrant to Jamestown in 1620. The death date of 1609 on Southern-458 is not possible and needs to change.

Sources are needed that prove John Southern's parentage and marriage. Also, there is a question about Memory Tucker being daughter of Captain William and Mary Thompson Tucker.
