About the NEWT Team

We know that WikiTree can be A LOT when you first join. Maybe you think that you're not ready yet for one of our 'Thons (Connect-a-Thon and Source-a-Thon), but participating in a team challenge is one of the quickest ways to learn your way around WikiTree. The NEWT team is specifically for those who have never taken part in a Thon and who want a supportive, fun first experience. It's also a great way to make some new WikiTree friends.

Join us for the upcoming April 2024 Connect-a-Thon scheduled to run from 8am EDT/12pm UTC on Friday, April 12th to 8am EDT/12pm UTC on Monday, April 15. Please sign up at this G2G post. Look for the NEWT thread (it will be an Answer on the post) and then submit your comment to that thread to join our team!

Captain: Betsy Ko

Team Philosophy

It's about learning and camaraderie, not high scores.

Everyone likes to see their name high on a leaderboard, but that's not the focus of the NEWT team. Whatever your starting point, the goal of this experience is to offer each team member the support they need to confidently add to WikiTree's branches.  Topics we'll address will include:

  • Finding a starting point from which to add new profiles
  • How to add new profiles that are connected to an existing one
  • How to find at least one source for your new profile
  • How to add a photo if you have one
  • How categorization can strengthen your profile
  • Collaborating with teammates using Discord and G2G, WikiTree's two major modes of communication

We'll meet twice via Zoom, once to get organized ahead of the event and a second time mid-Thon to hang out and check in.

Team Split

When a team reaches 50 members as registration progresses, it's asked to split into two teams. We are at 55 members (!), so have split into NEWT-A and NEWT-B. This is for scoring purposes only and won't affect how we'll run things. Remember, the NEWT team isn't about scores. Go ahead and look at them if you wish ... or not. One newly created profile that gives you some confidence with WikiTree is a WIN!

Hi Everyone,

We all did a great job this weekend, thank you. We hope you had fun. The total for the event was 88,908 profiles added to the tree. We appreciate your fab input and support for the event and look forward to working with you all again next time.

Thanks again for this weekend. On behalf of everyone in the Mighty Oaks Team

Hi ! Am I too late or is it still time to register ?
posted by A.-L. (Fouque) F.
Hello A.-L.,

I'm very sorry but we closed registration at midnight EDT/4 am UTC. You're still very welcome to connect along with us this weekend though. The main difference is that your score won't show up on the leaderboard. If you'd like to participate this way, please send me a private message through my profile (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ko-31). Then I can send you the NEWT team emails.

Cheers, Betsy

I would like to join but my time will be broken up due to previous obligations. How much time should I plan to devote to the Challenge? I know very little about WikiTree so want to learn more!
posted by Marcia (Jones) Lane
Hi Marcia,

Everyone's availability on Thon weekends varies, but it's more about the shared experience of improving the tree. You shouldn't let a busy weekend schedule discourage you from doing what you can. I've gone ahead and registered you. Look for some team emails from me later today or tomorrow morning.

Cheers, Betsy

Where is " Dave's April 2024 Thon Teaching Guide"? I see it mentioned in the video, but searches fail to locate it.

Dave, you should be able to see Dave's great free space page in your watchlist (under free space pages it's Virginia Draper ...). email me if you still don't find it.
Betsy,

It is absolutely wonderful to see "It's about learning and camaraderie, not high scores."

Thank you.

I am new to Wiki. I am really needing help with my Rose ancestral line from the Buckinghamshire area of England. My family came over with a Free Methodist movement. My direct ancestor (William Charles Rose, 1862-1945 / his father was Henry Rose, 1826-1897) came over from Liverpool to Galveston, TX in 1873. My relative was an ordained Free Methodist itinerant preacher throughout Texas, Ohio, Illinois, & Colorado. William died & was buried in Happy, Swisher, Texas, USA.

Thanks, Karen

Welcome, Karen! Although Connect-a-Thon isn't usually a time when we focus on brick walls, anything can happen. We'll do our best to help you as you connect out on your Rose ancestors. I've taken care of your registration. Look for some emails from me later today or tomorrow morning.

Hi Ronda,

The video is still in process, but I'll email everyone with the link when I have that.

Have been with Wikitree for a few years, I love the whole idea of it. I've entered what I know about my immediate family but want to learn how to do it right and to help others, if poss. I have a weird schedule but am willing to do what I can.

I'm fairly intimidated by WikiTree, so perhaps joining the NEWT team for Connect-A-Thon will help me get past my learning and contributing anxiety. I'm not even certain this is the correct place to comment to be added to the team.

Welcome everyone! Thanks cousin Betsy for making me a coach! I have been on WikiTree almost 3 years! I saw a post that stated this: You won't learn anything new in WikiTree until you make mistakes! I have made more than my share. I have been working on a pictorial tutorial where to download the "Free" app/browser called Sourcer and how to use it to help you find sources and then collect the sources from those sites. It had a lot of mistakes, so I have been reworking it the best it can be. I will share the link later when I make sure it is a perfect as I can make it. Many of you are my coussins! I look forward to working with you all!

I think this will be a helpful way for me to get over my anxiety about making mistakes. I love the source-based World Tree concept and am afraid I will mess up. Trying to move off my "private couch" into the community, even though it is out of my comfort zone. I learned a lot last night from you, Betsy, and others. Some of the terms fly right past my head. One of my problems is that I have Long Covid. Mostly it's dizziness but there is some brain fog, too. We shall see how I do...... Mary

Hi Mary--I saw your sign up on G2G; welcome!!! We're going to make friends with mistakes on this team. I love the saying that your best teacher is your last mistake. I'll be in touch with everyone via private message to strategize about where on the tree you want to concentrate your connecting efforts.
