About the NEWT Team

The Newt Team was designed for new members (newts) and WikiTree members that have never participated in a thon. The purpose is to teach team members some new genealogy skills, help to get through some of the WikiTree learning curves and meet WikiTree members who will be there to help long after the thon is over. Thons are made to be competative by organizing the event into teams and awarding prizes. Members on the Newt Team can be competitive or just have fun learning. Scoring points for the team is not the goal. We have a self-teaching program set up so team members can learn at their own pace. Team captains will by happy to answer questions at any time. Team captains are listed below. Click on their name and send them a private message. Two ZOOM meetings will be held to answer questions live. During the thons, team members chat back and forth in Discord and on a team page set up up on the G2G Forum in the Tree House. Join us, won't you?

Team Philosophy

Everyone likes to see their name high on a leaderboard, but that's not the focus of the NEWT team. Whatever your starting point, the goal of this experience is to offer each team member the support they need to confidently add to WikiTree's branches.  Topics we'll address will include:

For Connect-a-Thon: (January, April, July)

• What counts as a "connection"?
• Finding a starting point from which to add new profiles
• How to add family members to an existing profile
• How to find at least one source for your new profile
• How to add a photo if you have one
• How categorization can strengthen your profile
• How to collaborate with teammates using Discord and G2G, WikiTree's two major modes of communication

• What constitutes an unsourced profile?
• Where to find Unsourced Profiles
  • In your watchlist
  • Outside of your watchlist
• How to find sources
• Using the Sourcer extension
  • Sourcer can help you find records.

Team Zoom Meetings

We'll meet twice via Zoom, once to get organized ahead of the event and a second time mid-Thon to hang out and check in.
