James married Mildred Ham (Nelson) Story, the daughter of James Henry Nelson and Celena Hollis, marrying in Wayne County, Tennessee on December 22, 1897[2] and having ten children together, including twins--James L. and Mildred F--born in 1915, each of whom lived only a few days. In 1900, James and his family lived in Wayne County's Civil District 12 of Wayne County, residing alongside his in-laws and his brother, William, and farming. After his mother's remarriage, several of the siblings went to live with their older brothers; James' younger brother, Tom, lived with James and his family in 1900.[3] In 1910, James and his family lived in Civil District 15 of Lawrence County, Tennessee while James worked as a lumberman at a manufacturing plant.[4]
James registered for the World War I draft when he was 41, registering in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee on September 12, 1918.[5] He stated that he lived on Route #1 in Westpoint, Tennessee and that he worked for himself as a farmer. James was described as a man of medium height and build, with brown hair and blue eyes; he did not enlist.
In 1920, James' son, Don, worked as a farm laborer and his son, Roy, worked as a laborer at a sawmill.[6] In 1924, his son, Roy, the victim of a homicide, died from a gunshot wound to the head.[7] By 1930, only one child was left at home, James, Jr., and James, Sr. worked again at the sawmill.[8][9]
James Story passed away in Westpoint, Tennessee[10] at the age of 51 and is buried at Bethlehem Cemetery in Wayne County, Tennessee.[11]
