Lewis Tackett Sr. was a Virginia colonist.

Registered Huguenot

Lewis Tackett, is listed under: Huguenots Settling in Early Colonial Virginia[1]

Lewis Tackett's Registered Lineage.[1]

Lewis Tackett is listed under Documented French Huguenot Names by The National Huguenot Society.[2]

Birth

Lewis Tackett was born about 1670 in France.

Emigration

Lewis is said to have emigrated as a youngster, and spent his early years in England.

His family may have fled France just before the Edict of Nantes was revoked in 1685, and immediate persecution of Huguenots began. It is estimated Lewis was between the ages of 11-16, using the range of birth years 1670-1675 that have been associated with him.

No documentation has been discovered to support his year of birth, or year of arrival in England.

Marriage

Lewis Tackett married Mary Sarah, a British subject, before 1686. Her maiden name is unknown

See Mary Sarah's profile regarding the speculation that her maiden name was Spiller.

Immigration

Lewis Tackett migrated to the British Colony of Virginia, a 13 week journey across the Atlantic Ocean, around 1686-1687. His name appears on a 1686-1687 list of Huguenot passengers, whose passage was paid by Englishman, and Notary Public, Nicholas Hayward.[3]

Lewis Tackett JR, the first son of Lewis and Mary, was born about 1709.

In August of 1711, Lewis Tackett, and another Huguenot Immigrant, Louis Reno, jointly patented land in Cedar Run.

John was born about 1712, and William, was born around the year 1722. Rachel Tacketts year is of birth is unknown.

Surname Variations

Tacquette, Tackket, Tackette, Tacket, Tackit, Tackett.

The varied spelling of the Tackett surname, over a 300 year period, is evident on many United States documents.

Historically, people who recorded important legal documents such as land grants, vital records, and population census, used phonetic spelling.

Many used an anglicized spelling of a French surname to disassociate a person from the French, enemies in the British Colonies the Huguenots fled to, during the French and Indian War.

Research Notes

  1. There has been speculation that Mary Sarah's surname is Spiller. There is no documentation to support this. For more information about this, please see her profile.

Tacquette-1 and Tackett-21 appear to represent the same person because: same birth/death dates; differing spellings of LNAB needs to reconciled; Tackett appears to be most common spelling
Tacquett-2 and Tackett-21 appear to represent the same person because: Spelling is different but the English messed up the French spelling, same relatives.

The book "Gregory Family Origins," by Nathan Gregory (excerpts on Google books, downloadable e-book for $4.61) gives 1680, France for his birth. I've also seen ca. 1676 on a user-submitted genealogy. Our Immigrant Ancestors by Dorsey Thomas (unpublished?) gives ca. 1675. Whichever date you decide on should be marked as uncertain, unless you have a definitive source for the exact year. The original French spelling of the name appears variously as Louis Tacquett, Taquet, Tacquet, or Tacquette. It appears to have been anglicized during Lewis' lifetime.
