Biography
Willem was born about 1676. He was the son of Matthias 'Tyse' Barentsz Van Leerdam and Sijtie Cornelius. He passed away after 1750.
The Swaim family emigrated to America from Holland although many believe they were not of Dutch stock, but were English Pilgrims sojourning in Holland. The earliest record is of ANTHONY SWAIM, who came over from Holland in 1700 and settled on Staten Island in New York. From an old record we learn that he had four sons and his wife was a Huguenot lady. 1. Michael Swaim, who remained on Staten Island and whose descendents now live "up the Hudson."
2. Mathias Swaim, who moved to Essex County, New Jersey.
3. WILLIAM SWAIM, who moved to Surrey County, North Carolina.
4. 'Unknown' Swaim, who moved to Princeton, N.J.
WILLIAM SWAIM went South into the English Colony of North Carolina, which was then the extreme frontier, and settled at the head of the Yadkin River. Here he may have married a Cherokee squaw, as the old record men- tioned above states that there was a Cherokee squaw in the family line, and it could only have occurred here unless it was in the Vickery line in the next generation. (See John Swaim.) There were three sons. 1. Moses Swaim, who remained in Surrey County. No further record.
2. Michael Swaim, who remained in Surrey County. No further record.

This was sent to a Find-a-Grave contributor by Cecelia Frandsen: "William Swaim born in 1676 in Staten Island, NY was my 6th GGrandfather. He died however in Orange Virginia about 1850 and is buried in Orange Virginia. These are personal family records that re in the family. William and his family left Staten Island around 1723. The next record of them was in Orange County, Virginia. This area of Orange County becamen Frederick County Va in 1743. They lived near Winchester, Va and descendants still live in this area. Therefore it is assumed that the death place was Orange Va."[2]
