John Threlkeld Revolutionary War Soldier
“This John Threlkeld was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and belonged to Captain Marcus Company, 3rd Virginia Regiment as is shown in the Company Roll, 1777 & 1778. His name is there spelled Thrailkill, it is sometimes spelled that way according to sound of its pronunciation. He returned from the war, but died soon after reaching home from the exposure he had undergone. The widow of John Threlkeld, Mrs. Nancy Johnston Threlkeld emigrated to Kentucky in 1781 from their house in Spottsylvania County, Virginia.” This excerpt is taken from the Family Pedigree compiled by John P. Hawkins, Brevet(?) Major General U.S. Army Dec. 1894."[6]
"John Threlkeld, b. abt. 1742; d. abt. 1781, in Virginia; m. at. 1765 Nancy “Ann” Johnston, b. abt. 1745, dau. of Peter and Margaret Johnston of Culpeper Co., Virginia; moved to Culpeper Co. Deeded 405 acres of land in Culpeper Co., to James Ballinger, Mch. 17, 1777, which land had been patented in 1768 to Henry Threlkeld of Frederick Co, Maryland. John Threlkeld was a Soldier in the Revolution (See Saffell’s Record of Revolutionary War, p. 276.) He enlisted Feb. 23, 1776, for 2 years and was in Capt. Gus. B. Wallace’s Company. He re-enlisted in 1778m fir 3 years and was in Capt. John Francis Mercer’s Company, 3rd Virginia Regiment. He was paid April 6, 1778, at Valley Forge by Col. Weeden, and was also paid by Col. Thomas Marshall, and by Lieut. Col. Heath. His accounts were settled Feb. 1779 by the War Department. He returned home and died of illness incident to service. His wife and children moved to Kentucky about 1781.[7]
Research Notes
Per the will of Peter Jett (1717-abt.1784), his grandson was Jesse Threlkeld (abt.1765-) and his daughter was Margaret (Jett) Threlkeld (abt.1749-bef.1842). I have added Jesse Threlkeld to John Threlkeld based on the information given in the above biography. However, Jesse was not the son of Nancy Ann Johnston. It seems likely that John Threlkeld was previously married to Margaret Jett since the information in the above biography about Jesse Threlkeld matches the research completed. We know Margaret was alive in 1784 but no other records have been located by me for her. BJS

↑ Note: Ruth Ann Threlkeld, with her widowed mother and her brothers and sisters, moved from Culpeper Co., Virginia, about the year 1781, to Kentucky. Major Gen. John P. Hawkins, a great grandson of Nancy Johnson Threlkeld in his ‘Reminiscences’ states that a letter from Cyrus Threlkeld of Owenton, Kentucky, informs him that after the death of her husband, Nancy (Johnson) Threlkeld moved to Kentucky in company with Toliver Craig, Jr., (her uncle by marriage), her brother, Andrew Johnson, and others. Gen. Hawkins then states, ‘It would therefore appear that my great grandmother was of the notable band, members of the Spottsylvania Baptist Church, that accompanied Lewis Craig, then pastor, in his emigration to Kentucky in 1781, of the name Toliver Craig, Jr., is in the list (a very incomplete list) of those who, starting from Virginia in October 1781, endured the hardships of a Winter march to find a home in Kentucky where hey could rest secure from the persecutions they had endured.’ For an account of this march see ‘The Traveling Church’ a paper read before the Filson Club of Louisville, Kentucky. Jameson Hawkis came to Kentucky with his father and finally settled in Boone Co., on a farm near Burlingon, where he at one time represented his County in the State Legislature. He was an exhale in the Baptist Church and was later ordained as a preacher (Threlkeld Genealogy.pdf)
↑ Note: Margaret Threlkeld and William Cave were married in Woodford Co., Kentucky, by Rev. Elijah Craig. William Cave was the son of William and Grandson of Benjamin and Margaret Bledsoe Cave of Orange Co., Virginia. He was a Baptist preacher and came to Kentucky with Craig’s ‘Traveling Church’ in 1781 and helped form the Great Crossing Baptist Church. They moved to Boone Co., about 1795 (Threlkeld Genealogy.pdf)
