Biography

William Tyler can often be found on the internet as a son of Laurence Tyler and Dorothy Unknown. This is incorrect and they have been disconnected as parents. The will of Laurence Tyler does not name a son William and there is no baptism to suggest that this is true.
Some publications postulate that he was from Devonshire, England but this is undocumented.[1] Some believe he is the William Tyler who arrived Boston in 1656.[2]
He took the oath of fidelity in New Haven 7 Apr 1657.[3] He removed to Milford where he married Abigail Terrell by 1660 at Milford.[4]

Children

It should be noted that Savage sees and discusses discrepancies in names of the children as seen in various places.

Records of the First Church [Milford] (1640-1829) contain the following baptisms:

William bap 19 Sep 1669[5]
John bap 19 Sep 1669[5]
Elizabeth bap 19 Sep 1669[5]
Abigail bap 19 Sep 1669[5]
Mary (Marie?) and Thomas, twins, bap 6 Feb 1670[5]
Sarah bap 14 May 1671[5]
Hannah bap 26 Jan 1673[5]
Thomas bap 22 Nov 1674 (indicating the earlier twin did not survive?)[5]
Ruth bap 10 Feb 1677[5]

His death is variously seen as 1692 in Milford[1]; 1693 Milford, New Haven, Connecticut[4]

The inventory of William Tyler late of Milford deceased was taken on 8 February 1692/93 and recorded at New Haven.[6]

Agree with Susan below that his year of birth is likely notably earlier than 1644. However it is not certain that the 1646 record in the Barbour Collection is this person arriving at Milford.

If this William Tyler was born in 1644, he was only 13 when he took the oath in New Haven and was married at 16 or 18, which is a bit young for this culture. There is a note in the Barbour Collection: "Tyler, W[illia]m, came to Milford, 1646:"

Connecticut: Vital Records (The Barbour Collection), 1630-1870 (Online Database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2011.) From original typescripts, Lucius Barnes Barbour Collection, 1928: Milford, p. 168.

This strongly suggests he was born considerably earlier.

Tyler-2920 and Tyler-121 appear to represent the same person because: Same DOB, similar DOD, one has children with the same names as the other's siblings. Could be coincidental, of course.
