Biography
Disambiguation. This John Allen is most likely not the John Allen who arrived in 1635 on the Abigail.[1]The Great Migration identifies that John Allen as having settled first in the town of Plymouth and later in Scituate.[2]
John Allen was born in about 1615 England. He deposed in 1667 to be age about 52 (therefore born about 1615). His will was dated in 1672-3, at which time he said he was 57 years old.
Disputed Origins. It has been suggested[3] that he might be the son of John Allen of Norwich, Norfolk, England, whose son John was baptized there in 1615/6, and thus the brother of Rev. Thomas Allen of Charlestown, but there no is affirmative evidence for this.
John Allen immigrated to Charlestown, Massachusetts, where he was first recorded in 1639. John Allen was granted by town, 1639, a house plot on the beach between Mr. Coitmore and the fort. [4] On 28 October 1640, he was granted 20 acres of a plot originally laid out for a new minister of the church. The lot granted to Rev Thomas Allen, the new assistant Teacher to the minister, was 25 acres.[5]
Mr John Allen was admitted as a church member in 1641,[6] his wife Sarah in 1643; freeman 1639, Charlestown.[7] The use of the honorific "Mister" signified gentlemanly status in the colony at that time.
He married Sarah (name unknown) by 1640; she was admitted to the church 1643.[8]
Disputed Multiple Marriages. A previous version of this profile claimed that she died in 1643, but this was the year she was admitted to the church.
A previous version of this profile also claimed, citing Pope and Wyman (as cited by Torrey) that he married, second, Mary (name unknown) after 1644, and third, Sarah (name unknown) by 1657.[9] However, examination of the specific citations cited by Pope finds no evidence of death of his first wife, or marriage to others later. His only documented wife was Sarah. Given the spread of years between his oldest and youngest child, he might have had a subsequent wife by the same name who might have been mother of his youngest child.[1]

Of these, only Samuel, Thomas, Elizabeth and Rebecca survived him.
John Allen was described as a "mariner" and was captain of the ship Speedwell in 1666.[4] In 1669 the Massachusetts General Court appointed him a commissioner to prevent the export of coin, authorizing him to search ships and passengers attempting to leave the jurisdiction. It is noteworthy that the commissioners were entitled to a percentage of the illicit coin seized.[15] Unsourced quotation: "dearth of coin caused great inconvenience in transacting business and from time to time the General Courts of the different colonies endeavored to prevent export, thus in 1669 Capt John Allen of Charlestown was appointed by the General Court of Massachusetts, Commissioner to prevent the export of coin; but these measures did not meet with much success for the balance of trade was hopelessly against the colonies." (citation needed)
John Allen became a prosperous man with extensive holdings in land, mills, and shipping, e.g.: [4]
"Accepts a mercantile trust confided at London by William Allen of London, whose attornies were George emeris, alias Delamere of Newport, Isle of Wight, and Abr. Palmer of Chas. Cox, clothier, of Coggeshall magna; Jeremiah Garrard, clothier of Witham, the Exrs. of Sarah Tanner, the Exrx of Wm. Tanner of Coggeshall, to John Plumbe of Hartford, son of George Plumbe of Imworth, co. Essex. dated London, Jan 13, 1660/.
John Allen died on March 27, 1675, in Charlestown, Massachusetts.[16][17]
His Will was signed 1 Feb 1672/3 (being ae ca 57 years). Devised to widow Sarah, four children: Samuel, Thomas, Elizabeth and Rebecca. His widow Sarah was sole executor, to divide the proceeds of the estate equally among the children, e.g.:[18]

an observation: I believe usually the disambiguations and the disputed origins are above the biography heading. The paragraph directly below "disambiguations" may be confusing as to which John Allen? If that paragraph is kept with disambiguations, that name could be linked to the correct John Allen - probably John Allen - like this.
Both Wyman and Pope give three wives (1 Sarah, 2 Mary, 3 Sarah), but I'm not finding any evidence of a wife Mary. All the birth records, Sarah, Mary, Samuel, Sarah and Thomas give the parents as John and Sarah. That does leave Elizabeth in the middle without a birth record, who could theoretically be the daughter of Mary, but I found no evidence. Also could not find death record for any wife of John Allen. I also checked deeds, and could find no deeds. There are deeds of John granting land alone, and with Sarah. None with Mary?
Perhaps he was only married once? The of span of births is long (1640-1667), but not impossible.
Found it! Thanks, Lois; weird that he separated that entry by so many lines. Okay, the citations for the wife Mary are (I think I'm just repeating M Cole here; bottom line-- neither of these two have anything good about Mary):
True, but Torrey is only an index of other sources. The two sources he lists for all three marriages are Wyman ("Charlestown" in Torrey) and Pope.
Do you have access to the original/full version of Torrey (the one on AmericanAncestors.org) or just the abridged on Ancestry.com. If you're using just Ancestry.com, you may not know what I'm talking about...
The only one that adds anything is Flagg who only lists wife Sarah but adds: "It is apparent that these children represent the children of more than one wife. If Wyman is correct, Capt. John Allen had three wives (1) Sarah, (2) Mary, (2)[sic], Sarah. The third one long survived him and was deed land as late as 1697. It is probable that only Thomas, born years after Sarah, was her child."
My point was that if the author (Fulton) was focused solely on the ancestry of Rebecca, he may not have been evaluating whether her father John had additional wives.
Maybe there only one Sarah as you say. His will does mention my four children - Samuel, Thomas, Elizabeth and Mary, his widow Sarah as sole executor.

So if this is accurate, she died the same year she joined the church. BUT we have found no independent evidence that a) she died, and b) he remarried someone named Mary.
Correct children added to data section. Incorrect Allen-6782 detached.
Consideration still needs to be given to changing LNAB for attached spouse to UNKNOWN, there being no source given for "Mariner" and "Ann" is probably incorrect.
Can you enter some information on her profile regarding who says she's Unknown. And if known where does Mariner come from/originate. It looks as though she was married before 1640 so can probably be pgm also. And she needs to lose that middle name.
The middle name came from the Goodrich genealogy, which gave her name as Ann. This profile of John Allen appears to have been created to give John Goodrich a father for his wife Rebecca. I'm not really sure they got this right. At one point, the birthdate given here for Rebecca was 1653, but other sources have it as 1659-1660 or even later.
Which means that this Sarah, as the mother of Rebecca, would be the one marrying John Allen around 1657, not 1640. And I think her birthdate may be wrong, as her son Thomas was born 1667.
The John Allen that came on the Abigail was married to Ann...so that's probably the confusion there. As for "Mariner" I'd guess that since John Allen was a sea captain that somehow his profession ended up accidentally entered as her last name in someone's database?
Both John Allen's daughters named Sarah died in infancy. Thus neither of them could have married Ebenezer Campbell. Consideration should be given to detaching Sarah Allen-6782 from John Allen.
The only sources provided for the name Sarah Ann Mariner (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mariner-11) as John Allen's( probably third) wife do not provide a last name at birth for her.
These sources seem to derive from the genealogies of Rebecca Allen Goodrich, thus suggesting that this Sarah would be Rebecca's mother. If so, Rebecca's birthdate would probably be after 1657.
But the Goodrich genealogy cited gives Rebeccca's mother as Ann, and does not mention Mariner.
Consideration should be given to changing Sarah Ann Mariner's name to Sarah Unknown.
Same father, same mother, same birthplace. John the Dyer did have a son John - actually 2 but the first died. Same year of birth. Either there has been confusion (quite likely) amongst the numerous Johns and Thomas Allens in Norwich, or there could be something in it.
Lois, [as Ive strongly suggested previously] if youre sure that Robert Allen-41915, Thomas Allen-38107, and John Allen-1374 are siblings, you need to lay out your findings in g2g. Get responses from more experienced genealogists, and be willing to take their advice. Its called collaboration on WikiTree, and its how we operate here. Please.
I haven't found a WikiTree profile that clearly corresponds to the John Allen who arrived on the Abigail in 1635 and is profiled in TGM, vol. 1, page 36, at https://www.americanancestors.org/DB114/i/7051/36/22074408 . (But that doesn't mean that no profile exists....)
Allen-6783 and Allen-1374 appear to represent the same person because: I think these are intended to be the same person, but both profiles need better sourcing, and I suspect that neither one is factually correct.
I've not researched these people. I've just been trying to inventory several different John Allens in WikiTree.
The John Allen who immigrated to Charlestown is in the Great Migration Directory, so I added him to the PGM project. He is not, however, the man who arrived in 1635 on the Abigail; TGM has an entirely different biography for him.
The Directory entry for this man says:

Also noting that the implied death dates of each wife given in Torrey come right after the birth of a child.

Which is why the first Sarah would be the PGM profile and the 3rd only PGM Adjunct or whatever.

I think there might have been 2 Sarah's just by the age gap in the children's births,.

I looked for the Mariner and found it not.
If you go way way back in the changes to this profile, you can see it flipping back and forth from Kent to Norwich to Kent OR Norwich.
