Research Notes

This profile is part of the Gilbert Name Study.

By Chris Gilbert: It has been almost universally assumed - primarily due to the research of Douglas Richardson[1] - that Thomas was the Thomas, a son of Thomas Gilbert and christened at Yardley in Worcestershire on 16 February 1611/1612.[2][3] However, there is no evidence that the Thomas who appears in Windsor, Connecticut in 1644/1645 was this Thomas and it is not supported by Y-DNA testing as his descendants do not match the descendants of the Gilbert brothers from Yardley who appeared in Braintree, Massachusetts, by late February of 1639/1640 with their father Thomas Gilbert.[4] Therefore a separate profile has now been created for the Thomas Gilbert of Yardley which has dates which seem to tie in with him not leaving there, based on other records as given on his profile, or he may even have returned.

So the birth year of this Thomas Gilbert, is not known and has been estimated as "before 1620".

BigY DNA testing and research as of March 2023 suggests that he may be descended from a Gilbert family in Leicestershire, England. Gilbert-5441 21:33, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

Biography

Shortly before 24 January 1644/1645, Thomas Gilbert immigrated to New England, for on that date, he bought a five acre houselot in Windsor, Connecticut, from Francis Stiles.[5]

Windsor records show that sometime prior to 1652, Thomas Gilbert conveyed his houselot in Windsor to John Drake Sr. and, in turn, acquired an 113/4 acre houselot from Josiah Hull[6]. Afterwards, he sold this second Windsor houselot to Thomas Bissell and in 1655 left Windsor for Springfield, Massachusetts[7] While still "of Windsor," he entered into a marriage contract on 23 May 1655 with Katherine (Chapin) Bliss, the widow of Nathaniel Bliss of Springfield in which he promised to pay the children by her first marriage the inheritances ordered by the court after their father died intestate. The agreement is signed with an X, the mark of Thomas Gilbert.[8][9] He thereafter lived in Springfield where he died in 1662.[10]

It is apparent that Thomas Gilbert was widowed when he signed the marriage contract with widow Bliss. Lydia Gilbert of Windsor was condemned to death for witchcraft at a court session which began on 28 Novembr 1654:[11]

[Indictment] Lydea GiIburt thou art heere indited by that name of Lydea Gilburt that not hauing the feare of god before thy Eyes thou hast of late years or still dust give Entertainement to Bather [sic] the greate Enemy of god and mankinde and by his helpe hast killed the Body of Henry Styles besides other witchcrafts for which according to the law of god and the Estableshed law of this Comon wealth thou deservest to Dye.
[Verdict] ye Party above mentioned is found guilty of witchcraft by ye Jury.

The court record does not identify Lydia Gilbert, but she is assumed to be Thomas Gilbert's wife as she was accused of using witchcraft to kill Henry Stiles of Windsor, who had been Thomas Gilbert's former employer. [12]

Lydia is thought to have died shortly after being tried in Windsor, though no record of her actual execution has yet been found.

23 March 1656/1657: Oath of Freemanship/Allegiance: Springfield, Massachusetts Bay: "beinge a Trayning day these tooke the freemens oath: Thomas Gilbert"

27 March 1660 and 24 September 1661: Jury Duty: Springfield, Massachusetts Bay[13]

Thomas' last Will is dated 3 June 1662 at Springfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay and is recorded at Northampton, Massachusetts, Old Hampshire (County Wills 1:18, original Will and inventory on file.)

I Thomas Gilbert of Springfield, sick in body, but sound in mind, doe here make & ordayne this my last will & testament, committing myself unto the hands of my mercifull father, whether to live or to dye, trusting that both shall be unto mee advantage through Jesus Christ my Lord.

The two persons named as witnesses took their oath at the Court at Springfield, September 20, 1662, that this is ye last Will & Testament of Thomas Gilbert deceased.[14]

TAG 91 (2019) 30+ again reiterates that this Thomas Gilbert (based on Richardson's work), is the son of Thomas Gilbert. The daughter, Mary Gilbert on Thomas Gilbert's profile, both the author and Richardson attribute to Thomas, son of Thomas by wife Mary James rather than Mary Kenricke (again citing Richardson's TAG article). TAG 91 continues with a discussion of the wives shown on this profile.

I have seen the DNA information posted here.

Has anyone been in touch with Richardson, or done further research on this confused family?

posted by S (Hill) Willson
I have spent some time investigating this and untangling the confusion that has arisen, and found out more than Richardson who simply made incorrect assumptions that have led to everyone until now just copying them. There were 2 Thomas and Mary Gilbert couples in England as explained on the profile for the Thomas of Yardley. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gilbert-10510

The Thomas of this Profile does not fit with being from Yardley although lots of people seem to want it to be the case because of Richardson's work etc. More research, and Y-DNA participants, may unravel things further. If any other work gives sources that are so far not included in the various Thomas' profiles, they will be welcomed.

Gilbert-10510 and Gilbert-196 appear to represent the same person because: Obviously the same person. Thomas Gilbert had 4 wives total and each profile matches up some of them.

By request, I have switched him to Connecticut, since he isn't Puritan Great Migration

Should he even be PGM is he arrived in 1644/5?
posted by Chris Hoyt
No evidence when he arrived as far as I can see. That date was when he bought a houselot according to what has been written but I do not have access to the source.

There seems to be some conflict here Richardson's article in: TAG 67: 1992: p. 161 (the one you don't have access to) says Thomas Gilbert granted land at Braintree Feb, 1639/40: sons John, Jonathan and Josiah leased land at Wethersfield as early as 1651 - so they would have been over the age of 21 by then. This Thomas removed to Wethersfield by 1658. It appears the beginning of the article refers to the father Thomas Sr.

Same article Thomas's estate inventoried Sept. 5, 1659 which included funeral charges for both Thomas and his wife.

Estate distributed on Feb. 6, 1663/4 to six sons being Jonathan, Thomas, Ezekiel, Josiah, Obadiah and John and daughter Sarah Jenkins.

Baptisms: Yardley Parish Register

February 16, 1611/12 Thomas son of Thomas Gilberte
June 8, 1617 Jonathan son of Thomas Gilberte
January 9, 1619/20 John son of Thomas Gilberte
February 17, 1621/2 Ezekiel son of Thomas Gilberte
November 27, 1625 Josiah son of Thomas Gilberte
June 7, 1629 Obadiah son of Thomas Gilberte

And that Thomas Jr. married first Mary James In Sept. 1639 : had a child baptized at Yardley in 1641; bought land at Windsor, CT in 1644/5. Married second Lydia ___; married 3rd widow Katherine (Chapin) Bliss, lived in Hartford. Died at Springfield June 5, 1662.

So https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gilbert-10510 is this Thomas father and his mother is Elizabeth Bennett.

Sorry, but where is the proof that this Thomas was the son and that he was not another Thomas from England? Just because assumed father had a son Thomas does not make it this one. The DNA does not fit. That is why I have done a separate profile for the son of Thomas and added the notes etc.

You said you didn't have access to the article, I was just providing what it says.

OK, sorry for not saying thanks Chris. Richardson naturally jumps to conclusions in some of his research. The wife Mary James did not fit when looked into.

I am new to this website and to Genealogical research as a whole, but I was wondering if anyone knows what ship Thomas Gilbert Jr. came to the New World on, the captain of the ship, if anyone on the voyage knew him, the reason he left England etc. Any feedback is appreciated thank you.

Chris, how can you possibly say that there is no evidence that this Thomas was not the one christened in Yardley when the names of six of his father's children are exactly the same: Jonathan, Thomas, Ezekiel, Josiah, Obadiah and John Gilbert. That's too much of a coincidence. Please make this change back.

Benjamin. Have you read what I have written at the start of the bio? The DNA does not tie up and there is a Thomas who was in Yardley who could be the son of who people have previously assumed was his father Thomas. Just because there was a son Thomas does not make him this Thomas. There is no source to link this Thomas to the supposed father and then explain the DNA mismatch. Happy to discuss. I see no reason to make the change back and then put his father as uncertain when the note states what it does.

I have made a number of changes as I challenge the wide held assumption that this Thomas was the son of the Thomas Gilbert born in Yardley. For now I have added a Research Notes section before the biography.

There was no shire government for Springfield until the formation of Hampshire County in 1662; Hampden County was not founded until 1812. I've made the corresponding changes in the bio.

David: short simple explanation on which I have sent you a lengthy private message: Temple's "History of Brookfield" missed a generation. He corrected himself shortly thereafter with a piece in the July 1888 NEHGR — found online at archive.org: https://archive.org/stream/newenglandhisto03unkngoog#page/n296/mode/1up . There are a couple of marital details for Thos. IV & V on which Temple may be right, but in the main, his corrected lineage matches what you see on WikiTree.

I could not stop the merge of this Thomas and the one at West Bromwich so I have removed Mary James as 1st wife and reinstated the other Thomas (new profile Gilbert-10499) for now. There is no solid proof to connect them as the same Thomas. There were lots of Gilbert families in Staffordshire and Thomas and Mary are very common names for them. Other children were baptised at West Brom to Thomas and Mary. I will further research them as part of ongoing Gilbert name Study work on Gilberts in this area. I will look at the Mary born at Yardley - but since Thomas and Mary at West Brom had a daughter Abigail baptised in the same month there as Mary I cannot see how they can be the same Thomas!
posted by Chris Gilbert
Note that the 1641 child, Mary, of Thomas & Mary Gilbert is christened at Yardley -- supporting the idea that the father was this Thomas, not another Thomas born in Staffordshire.

Gilbert-9930 and Gilbert-196 appear to represent the same person because: The case that these are the same Thomas is quite well made in Richardson's 1992 TAG article at https://www.americanancestors.org/DB283/i/12962/161/24672232 . Based on that piece I have added Mary James as first wife of Gilbert-196. (For anyone without an NEHGS subscription, the article appears to have been copied in its entirety at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~dmasilm/genealogy/gilbert.htm .)
posted by Christopher Childs
Please, what is the source for an "about 1596" birth for Lydia (Unknown) Gilbert?? The Richardson TAG article does not assign her any age or estimated birth year. It is an important point, as a 1596 birth would make her as much as 15 years older than this Thomas -- leading to the question of whether she was wife of Thomas I rather than II.

I have removed myself as profile manager because there are quite a few. I would still like to remain on the Trusted List though.
Gilbert-716 and Gilbert-2984 do not represent the same person because: I need to temporarily reject this match. Will correct some info and then reinitiate merge with the correct person
