Hi Timothy, I was checking my links on today's connection finder and found a problem

A Horace Tillett who died in 1930 and lived in England has been married to a lady, living 100 years earlier in America . It's not a profile I know anything about .Could you take a look at it and check you've added the wife and child to the correct man ? https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tillett-20

20:52: Tim Leahy added Horace James Tillett (1877-1930) as spouse for Amelia (Veale) Carter (abt.1720-abt.1780). (Connected spouses while adding father) [Thank Tim for this]

Thank you so much for your quick response. I know how easy it is to leave a wrong connection when unravelling a cat's cradle. All's well again.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for creating profiles like Von_der_Marck-Arenberg-2. When you find a tertiary source like Wikipedia, please use that to try and find primary sources (or if none, then at least secondary sources). The Wikipedia page should be a good lead for finding sources.

Also note, for Wikipedia you can link like this on Wikitree: [ [Wikipedia:Margaret_de_La_Marck-Arenberg]] (no space between square brackets inserted here so it would not render as a link.)

Let me know if you need any help with this.

Thanks.

-William

Thank you for your suggestion. I have traced this line of ancestors all the way back to Gediminas, Grand Duke Lithuania (c 1255 to c December 1341) and checked wikkitree to see whether these ancestors are already listed so that I can just connect the links but, sadly, they do not appear to be. Perhaps because some require primary sources, which is not feasible for most. I've been expanding my tree to help others learn their links to royalty. To my mind, an online source is preferable to nothing.

As for citing to wikkipedia, it often provides primary and secondary sources, and I do not want to list them because doing so would imply that I have checked them. It would be better, in my view, for the super curious to check those sources noted in wikkipedia directly themselves.

Hi Tim, I ran across a profile you created today for Charles de Ligne, which is sourced from a Wikipedia article. This is just a reminder that WikiTree guidelines encourage us to write original content on our profiles, not just copy/paste from other sites. You might want to review these help files, Copying Text and Copying from Wikipedia, as well as a G2G discussion, one of several posts covering this topic.

If you need help finding valid sources for older profiles such as this, you might check with projects such as European Aristocrats, or any of the many Projects that cover relevant time periods and locations. Most projects maintain a list of reliable sources for their areas.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz, Tim!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Sources are very important here on Wikitree, especially on Pre-1700 profiles. It is how we show where we got the info and helps others find it too. Find out more about Pre-1700 Profile sourcing here and source citation info here.

The United States project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

If you have any questions, click “reply” below this message and I will get back to you.

Hi Tim

Welcome back and thanks for signing the Honor Code. I hope you discover as much about your family as I have about mine over the last several years.

Check out the How-to pages for some quick tips on working with both the Wiki pages and our other members. There is some great information on those pages.

If you have questions about how WikiTree works, let me know and I will try to find answers. This can sometimes take a little time, so please be patient. Just reply to this comment, or click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page, or send me a private message.

Hi –

We are happy to have you as a member of WikiTree. I hope you’re enjoying being here.

I'm a member of the Mentor project, and I just wanted to check in and see how things are going. Do you have any questions I can help you with?

Hello Again,

You've been a member of WikiTree for about a week now so I thought I would check in to see how it's going. Have the How-Tos been helpful or left you with questions?

I want to help! Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page or send me a private message. Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile. The links will work from there.

Cindy ~ WikiTree Messenger

PS To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to this link. RootsSearch. There are 24 different websites available and most are free. Give it a try!

Welcome Back Tim!

Since you confirmed as a full member we are happy you are part of the WikiTree community! To help save you time, energy and frustration, please start with our New Member How-To pages.

Click the green Tag on your profile page, you'll see others following the same things you are researching. The more Tags you add that include locations, periods of history or other genealogical interests, the more links to the community research options.

Please ask if you have any questions as I am always happy to help!

Cindy ~ WikiTree Greeter

PS If you ever get a "Page Not Found" error when you click a link in a WikiTree email, you can usually find a functioning link in the public comments section of your profile page.

Hi Tim,

Joining WikiTree can be a serious commitment. If this is not for you, we understand.

Sharing your research by providing a link to your family tree at ancestry.com would not be helpful to many of our members. One must have a paid subscription to ancestry.com in order to see it.

Tim,

I did receive your message. Sorry for all the graphics on my page, I suppose it could be a bit startling. I took a look at the link you sent. You will need to finish registering on WikiTree by adding your research Tags and click "Add tags and Volunteer." You will then be confirmed as a Family Member.

Once that is done you will have to decide how you want to add your family to WikiTree and how many you want to bring in. Also you should make sure you have sources for those family members.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Hello Tim, welcome to WikiTree!

The email we just sent has helpful links to get you started.

WikiTree is different because our goal is to have one profile per person, and that means we share ancestors and work together as a BIG collaborative team!

What brings you to WikiTree? Do you have research you’d like to share? Are you interested in how your family fits into the big tree?

When you confirm your email address, you’ll be given an opportunity to volunteer to help document our collective family history. Use the Tags and comments to tell us about your genealogical interests.

When you volunteer, one of our Greeters will confirm your membership. Then you'll be able to add your family to the tree!

We're really glad you're here!
