About 1722 in St. Mary's Parish, Essex County, Virginia, Elizabeth Carter Lloyd married Francis Browning, who was born in 1686 in St. Anne's Parish, King & Queen County, Virginia and who died 21 Jan 1775, St. Mark's Parish, Culpeper County, Virginia (Age 89 years) [1]

Francis Browning, Sr. was born about 1700 in Caroline County, Virginia and died about 1775 in Culpeper County, Virginia. In 1723 in Culpeper, Virginia, he married Elizabeth Lloyd, born in Maryland. [2]

In about 1716 in Culpeper County, Virginia, Elizabeth Lloyd married Francis Browning. He was born about 1686 in St. Anne's Parish, Essex County, Virginia. He died 21 January 1775 in Culpeper County, Virginia. [3]

Research Notes: Who were Elizabeth's Parents?

John Lloyd and Elizabeth Carter

Mike Marshall shows Elizabeth Carter Lloyd born before 1692 in Richmond County, Virginia, the daughter of John Lloyd-2430 (born about 1666) and Elizabeth Carter-1752 (born about 1676). [1] John Lloyd in turn was the son of Col. William Lloyd.

Elizabeth Carter Lloyd died of measles the same year her daughter Elizabeth was born. Elizabeth's father returned to England and died there. No information has been found on the childhood or marriage of the daughter Elizabeth.

John Lloyd, the father, is shown as administrator of the estates of both his father and his brother, Thomas Lloyd. Additionally, Elizabeth was administratrix of her late husband's (Carter's) estate, and following her death, shortly after she and John Lloyd were married, John took over the responsibilities of running Col. John Carter's estate as well. Some researchers say that John and Elizabeth (Carter) Lloyd had a daughter, Elizabeth Lloyd, who married Francis Browning.

George Lloyd and Joanna Gregson

Some sources have Elizabeth's data of birth as 1692 in Lancaster County, Virginia.

Some sources believe that Elizabeth Lloyd, the wife of Francis Browning was the daughter of George Loyd-72 and his wife Joanna Gregson-162.

George Loyd operated the Inn which was adjacent to the early courthouse in Essex Co VA. When he died in 1712, he was survived by his wife, Joanna (Gregson) Loyd, several daughters and one son, Samuel. Samuel moved to the same area of King & Queen Co/Spotsylvania Co as did Francis Browning. Samuel's mother, Joanna (who was the sister of Thomas Gregson, a merchant of Bristol, England) continued operation of the Inn after the death of her husband. Samuel is not found in the early Essex Co records except as an heir of his father and his uncle, Thomas Gregson.

In September 1723, Spotsylvania records show the sale of Samuel Loyd's land. When he returned to Essex Co, he took up land near the Peumansend Swamp - near where Francis Browning owned land.

The little community of Loyds (now spelled Lloyds) where Loyd's Inn and the early Essex County Courthouse were located is now almost extinct.

However, the records indicate that Elizabeth Loyd, daughter of George and Joanna, never married, and died childless.

William Lloyd and Mary Ann Crowley

Hurley shows Francis Browning, Jr. 1696-1775. This son of Francis Browning (1672) was born c1696 and died January 21, 1775 in Culpeper County. Francis was married c.1716 to Elizabeth Lloyd, born 1698 in Maryland, and died before 1740 in Culpeper County, Virginia; [4]

Elizabeth Lloyd was born about 1704 in Maryland, the daughter of William Lloyd and Mary Ann Crowley. [3]

One source says Elizabeth was the daughter of William Lloyd (1680) and Mary Ann Crowley (1682) and a granddaughter of Col. Edward Lloyd and Alice Couch. Col. Edward Lloyd had moved from VA into Talbot Co MD in the mid- I600s, where he founded a dynasty of political leaders of the colony, establishing his seat at "Linton" on the Wye River. His grandson and namesake, later Major General Edward Lloyd, would serve as Chief Magistrate of Maryland from 1709 to 1715.

Elizabeth Lloyd is said to be a daughter of William Lloyd-6947 (1680) and Mary Ann Crowley (1682), and a granddaughter of Colonel Edward Lloyd and Alice Couch. [4]

Sampson Lloyd and Elizabeth Good

Some sources show Elizabeth Lloyd, born about 1703 in Maryland, to be the daughter of Sampson Lloyd-2411 and Elizabeth Good-823, born 8 January 1685 in Maryland[5]

Some sources believe Elizabeth is the daughter of Sampson Lloyd and Elizabeth Good. This fine goes back to King Henry VIIII of England. Burke's "Landed Gentry" says Sampson Lloyd had four daughters by Elizabeth Good. They aren't named. Burke's "History of Commoners of Great Britain & Ireland ..." names the four girls and says Elizabeth Lloyd was bom 08 Jan 1687 and died 30 Mar 1697 (age 10). If this is correct, that Elizabeth Lloyd isn't the one who married Francis Browning.

Miss Lloyd of Maryland

Writing in 1900, Judge D. A. Grimsley stated that "the wife of Francis Browning was a Miss Lloyd, of Maryland. [6]

In an extract from a letter written by John Armistead Browning of Greenfield, Rappahannock Co VA to Mrs. Nettie Browning Danforth Kinnison, John says: "Cousin Nettie, I may have told you before, but I will repeat it, our Francis Browning married a Maryland Lloyd of a high family." [3]

Problem: Some sources have DOB 1692, Lancaster Co., VA.

Elizabeth was born in 1685. She passed away about 1740.

I have removed the middle name "Rachel" as I have found no documentation that Elizabeth had a middle name. I can always be added back if a source is found.

There is substantial disagreement as to who Elizabeth Lloyd's parents are. The case for each alternative is presented in separate paragraphs under Research Notes. Since no alternative is persuasively the right one, I am disconnecting her from her current parents; links to the possible parents are in each of the alternative paragraphs.

Lloyd-526 and Lloyd-438 appear to represent the same person because: The dates may not match, and her parents may be uncertain, but unless Francis Browning had children by multiple Elizabeth Lloyds, I'm pretty sure these profiles are meant to represent the same person. More research may be needed to verify said dates and parentage, but there is no reason that that uncertainty should justify three separate profiles for what is most certainly one individual.

Since these two Eliasabeths are obviously the same person the merge should be completed. The profile needs to be sourced as to which birth place is correct. This should not hold up the merge. If sourcing is not going to be done the conflict can be documented on the bio of the merged profile.
