I was born in Hot Springs, AR. I left for college in August 1966. After graduation, I worked in Memphis, TN, Searcy, AR, Dallas/Ft Worth, TX. I returned to my hometown in 1986 and have lived here ever since. I married in 1969 in Hot Springs and divorced in 1994 in Hot Springs. I remarried in 2009. I have three children all born in Memphis. I have three step-children all born in Arkansas.
My father is Carl Freeman Maddox. His father was George Washington Maddox. GW Maddox moved his family along with those of one brother and sister from Jefferson County, Alabama to Montgomery County, Arkansas in the fall of 1883. Another family moved with them: Benjamin Drake Taylor family.
The information that I want more than anything is why did GW Maddox and the other families move from Alabama. There were 32 people in all (17 children under the age of 18 and two less than 1 year old). There is a book that mentions the move and said one of the mules was blind! If anyone knows what was going on that made Arkansas look like the "promised land" please let me know.
