Mitchell-26006 and Mitchell-1524 appear to represent the same person because: same/similar dates, same spouse and daughter.....previously rejected with no reason given

Mitchell-26006 and Mitchell-1524 do not represent the same person because: Mitchell-26006 was born in Virginia and not Scotland. His wife, Elizabeth Innes was also born in Virginia and not Scotland.

Mitchell-26006 and Mitchell-1524 are not ready to be merged because: Maybe..... but there is not enough correlative data to make a match out of it - at least not yet.

Just curious: What specifically are you looking for? And where might we look to find it?

The information is too sketchy. You have the same names, yes. The birth date is close and both files mention Chesterfield County, VA. That could still be circumstantial. If their background is Scotland, they could be cousins with a grandfather named William. The Scots are awful about repeating names in sequence. Match parents, spouses, children, siblings... enough to say we're all talking about the same person, for sure. It's easier to be careful than to unattach and clean up a mess later. As to finding more data.... that's the hard part. Look for clues in the record here. Google William's name and possible dates.... check other sites - like GENi (but don't just slap their information into the file. Double-check.) One of the files says he was born in Scotland and the other says he was born in Chesterfield. One was probably assumed by someone collecting information. Which one??? You'll probably have to devote a day or two to the project before you have enough results. You'll get there; you're just not quite there yet.

Mitchell-26006 and Mitchell-1524 appear to represent the same person because: they have the same daughter: Mary or Margaret (Mitchell) Clay. Some profiles actually call her Mary Margaret Mitchell Clay. Also, his death year is the same on both.

Regarding the difference in birth locations, notice that several of the children of Mitchell-26006 were born in Scotland, which means he probably was also born in Scotland. Just like Mitchell-1524.
