Biography

JOHN PETERSON

  • Birth:
  • Marriage:
  • Death: between March 1731 (WFT) and 24 Jan 1731/32 (rec'd) Isle of Wight, VA. (See original WFT below)

John Peterson, son of John Peterson, was born before 1673. He married Martha Batte, and they had at least one child: Batte Peterson. John died in 1731[1] in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.[2]

John Peterson was the father of Anne Peterson, Batte Peterson, John Peterson, and Judith Peterson, who are named in his will, written March 1, 1731; "Proved and Recorded Jan 24, 1732 Isle of Wight Co Va. (also Page 113 17th Century Isle of Wight by Boddie)."[3] He also had a daughter Tabitha Peterson, b. 1697, d. 1726, who married John Eppes, d. 1725. They had one child John Eppes, b. 1723, d. 1740. This child inherited from his grandfather, John Peterson, 500 acres of land mentioned in Peterson's will. [4]

Southside Virginian says the 1731 will of John Peterson mentions daughter Anne Thweatt and also says Anne's sister Judith married a Thweatt. Also from Southside Virginian:

The name Batte also appears. In the opinion of some researchers, the mother of Anne, and the wife of John Peterson, d. 1731 was a member of the Batte family who is as yet unidentified.

Birth

  • before 1673[5]

Family

At least two daughters: Anne and Judith.[6] Three daughters named in will: Anne Thweatt, Judith Thweatt, and Mary Spain.

  • from Mary Batte: She is probably the child of William Batts...Batte...Batt who is already on here, as is she, with another husband. But John Peterson was his neighbor as of 1715. She probably married first a Brown and had Burrell and Jeremiah by this marriage. They were probably raised by John Peterson as he left them many acres in his will.

Hi! Considering your name & the descendants of Patterson-1626 (Snodgrass), I'll remove the Peterson parents from this profile (Peterson-4205 & Soane-27), as the Petersons of Isle of Wight County were a different family than the Augusta County Pattersons. I'll also delete the datafield information: "Died Oct 1732 in Isle of Wight, Isle of Wight, Virginia, United States"

John Peterson, born Charles City County, Virginia in 1673, was their son. His will was proved in Isle of Wight County in Jan. 1732/3.

Cheers, Liz -->

Is there anyone that can point to a primary source showing John Peterson having a wife by name of Martha? Or any other given name?

The now found will of Henry Batte only names a daughter Peterson. My understanding is Peterson’s will does not name a wife. It has been more than a decade since I researched some of this, but I don’t recall I ever found proof of his wife’s given name.

Considering the names Burrell and Jeremiah Brown that were left legacies in the Peterson will, I presumed there was likely some family connection to the earlier Jeremiah Brown d. 1690 in Henrico, who left no children per his will. He had sister Temperance/Temple Batte, wife of Thomas Batte Jr. d. 1691. He was nephew of aforesaid Henry Batte.

The LAWS OF VIRGINIA, OCTOBER 1705.−−−4th ANNE. at https://vagenweb.org/hening/vol03-26.htm confirm the naturalization of John Peterson amongst others. The Wm and Marty Quarterly above show stated ""Jo. Peterson my grandfather emigrated to Va. from the Island of Great Britain about the year 1660 or 70 and settled in Co. of Isle of Wite ..." However, birth place is identified as Charles City, Virginia. Wouldn't the naturalization record indicate John was born in England?

I have been working on FamilySearch digitized microfilm records on Peterson/Chappell, but I am not a Peterson descendant. I attached the digitized will of John Peterson and did verify his children per will. Was curious of the daughter not named who married an Eppes, hence grandson John Eppes in the Peterson will. Located the missing daughter of John Peterson on FamilySearch: Tabitha Peterson, about 1697 – 2 November 1726 • L1WW-L15, ( https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L1WW-L15. ) She and husband John Eppes both died prior to John Peterson's will date, only having one child, the grandson John Eppes. The Life Sketch on Tabitha Peterson Eppes has estate probate records, etc. Would a profile manager add her as a daughter of John Peterson and Martha Batte using the FamilySearch records? THANK YOU!

Juliet, thanks for this information. I have removed myself as a PM on this profile having no idea how I became one (no relation to this family at all). I would go ahead and make the changes since you are pre-1700 certified and have valid sources. The profile is also in serious need of a clean-up and reorganization if you felt so inclined.

Henry Batte Will of 1695 and the origin of Brothers Brown of John Pederson, II Will 1731

First of all, finding a possible Gateway Ancestor for those of southern ancestry is a very rare occasion. More rare is finding confirmation of that ancestor in a record which was once lost AND RETURNED to its rightful place nearly 150 years hence. I'm sorry to report to descendants of the Brothers Brown, myself included, that I find confirmation of NO connection to Henry Batte! With the discovery of the Henry Batte will of 1695, proved 1699, one can be virtually certain, apart from some further revelation, that the mother of brothers Burrell and Jeremiah Brown, from the John Pederson II will of 1731, was NOT a daughter of Batte. Sadly, I report that this mother of the Brown children, not named that I know of anywhere apart from reference to a 'Widow Brown' in a library family file from Sumter Co., SC, CAN NOT be the 'daughter Pederson' from the Batte will. Again, lacking better reference, the best supposed approximate dates for Jeremiah and Burrell Brown are 1710-1712. Being referenced as 'in default of issue' as a condition of their inheritance in 1731, it is reasonable to conclude that they are young making 1710-1712 a possible, certainly likely age by 1731. To conclude that the 'Widow Brown' is the 'daughter Pederson' of 1695, the Brown bros would be 35 or more years of age at the time of writing the will and still without issue in this period; not likely. More obvious is the likelihood that the first wife and mother of the Batte children is this ‘daughter Pederson.’ I would be thrilled to be proven wrong on this one. For me, sadly, another Gateway Ancestor fail!!

In addition to the above sources on Jeremiah and Burrell Brown, because of the generous provisions left by John Pederson in his will of 1731, it is speculated that they could be the sons of an unlisted daughter of John Pederson, I, (The Southside Virginian, Vol. 8, Jan 1990, p. 27-28) but with no other sources. The possibility of a Pederson connection for the Brown brothers is also hinted at in the 1757 (post death Burrell) will of one Susannah (Lifsay) Wallace, Brunswick Co., Va., where Jeremiah and is included w John Pederson, III, and his full sister, Martha Thorp, among a list of legatees (The Southside Virginian, Vol. 7, 1989, p. 103).

Find a Grave, in and of itself, is not a source. The memorial referenced in the previous post (#67166728) is for a John Peterson, husband of Mary. (no sources given and no pictures of tombstones)

Peterson-680 and Peterson-529 are not ready to be merged because: I agree with some of the comments that it is not immediately apparent that these are the same individuals. Is there more information available to support the merger?
Patterson-3057 and Peterson-529 are not ready to be merged because: Too many differences, can't tell if they were the same person
Patterson-3057 and Peterson-529 appear to represent the same person because: same person. Please merge Patterson into Peterson (meaning, keep Peterson as last name & Peterson-529 as WikiTree ID). Transcript of will has Peterson (see source on Peterson-529). Thanks!
