Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Suzanne (Rochet) Michaux was a Virginia colonist.

Suzanne Laroche Rochet was born about 1676 in Sedan, Ardennes, Champagne-Ardenne, France, the daughter of Jean Moses Rochet and Marie Poire (Trufet) Rochet. She married Abraham Micheaux.

  • From Virginia Genealogies #1, pre-1600 to 1900s / Genealogies of Virginia Families IV, He-S, The Huguenot Abraham Michaux and Descendants, Page 318: The Story of 'Little Nightcap' is well known to Michaux descendants.Briefly it is as follows: After the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in1685, Jean (Moses) Rochet (Rochette is incorrect) tried to get his youngest daughter to Amsterdam, Holland, where many refugees had fled to escape persecution and death. Among those were two of his daughters, who had been kindly received by Christian friends. They wrote their father to send their little sister to them, but fearing that their letters might fall into the hands of enemies of the Huguenots, they asked him to send 'the little nightcap' they had left behind.

After several unsuccessful attempts to get little Susanne out of France, her father arranged to have her shipped in a large cask, or hogshead, which was entrusted to a friendly sea-captain, who had the cask placed onboard his ship. When they had sailed and were safely past the guards who were posted on vessels in the harbour, the cask was opened and Susanne was lifted out of her narrow dark chamber, and was brought safely to Amsterdam, where her sisters received her with great joy.

There are variations of the Story, but the most interesting account is the one published in 1888 by Rev. William Dennis Morton, D.D., in the 'Central Presbyterian', and republished on April 12, 1916, in 'The Presbyterian of the South'. (This charming story was republished in 1933 in 'The Huguenot', No. 6; the Annual of the Huguenot Society, Founders of Manakin in the State of Virginia. As this Story is highly prized by Michaux descendants, and has been widely distributed, certain errors in Dr. Morton's account should be pointed out: 1) Dr. Morton repeats the statement made in the Michaux Bible by Mrs.Venable, that the family first settled "in Stafford County, in Virginia,on the banks of the Potomac River." I have been unable to find any evidence for this..... From the HUGUENOT PUPLICATION No. 15, P81
"Suzanne Rochet, The little Night Cap: by Reverend Twyman Williams:
On the 13th of April 1667, in Sedan, France, JEAN ROCHET and wife MARIE had a little daughter baptized whom they named SUZANNE for her grandmother Suzanne Rondeau, wife of Thierre Rochet, also of Sedan, France. Thierri Rochet was a son of Thomas Rochet of Sedan and his wife Marguerite Beauciel. So the baby Suzanne was of the fourth known generation of the Rochet family in Sedan, province of Champagne, France.
Among the French Huguenot refugees who escaped to Holland were two sisters of Suzanne Rochet. One later went to England and was married in London in 1689 to Jacques Trufet. (Trufet was the mane of Jean Rochet's wife, Marie). "The Huguenots" by Foote gives an account of the sister's escape and the attempt to escape of Suzanne and a first cousin. Their father, Jean Rochet, did not leave France. The sisters in Holland wrote several letters to their parents to send them "the little night cap" they had left behind when they made their escape. (they were referring to their sister whom they were afraid to mention by name) Jean Rochet got his daughter, Suzanne, into a hogshead marked "merchandize" and she was put on the ship of a friendly captain. The soldiers who inspected the ship did not find her and she got safely to Holland.

NOTES ON THE MICHAUX FAMILY
As prepared by Mrs. H.H. LeGrand, 1942
During the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715) there lived in the city of Sedan, in the province of Champagne, France, a wealthy French Protestant named Moses Roche (pronounced Ro-shay). He had three daughters.
Roche, fearing the two older girls would be taken and put in a Catholic school, sent them to Amsterdam, Holland. Their father often visited, their mother also went, carrying money in her hair, and purchased them silks and other fine dresses.
The two sisters, while residing in Holland, would write their parents and request them to send the "little cap" they had left behind, meaning their little sister, but fearing to mention her name as the letters were all examined.
After several unsuccessful attempts to get "little cap" (Susannah) out of France, her father arranged to have her shipped in a large cask or hogshead which was entrusted to a friendly sea captain, who had the cask placed on his ship.
When they had sailed and were safely past the guards who were posted on vessels in the harbour the cask was opened and Susannah was lifted out of her narrow, dark chamber and was brought safely to Amsterdam, Holland, where her sisters received her with great joy. The escape of Susannah Roche into Holland is considered one of the thrilling classics of Huguenot history.
Susannah Roche was baptized in France, April 13, 1667, died ante December 18, 1744 in Virginia. She was married to Abraham Michaux, a prominent Huguenot who fled from France to Holland during the persecution. He was born in 1672 in Sedan, France, and died in 1717 in Virginia.
Susannah and Abraham were married in the French church in Amsterdam, Holland on July 13, 1692. She was a lace-maker and he was a gauze weaver. They had a family of twelve children, five sons and seven daughters; several of these children were born in Holland. They first came to Stafford County, Virginia. They resided thee for some time. The oldest son, Jacob, was sent out among the colonists to work as a (tinker?). At length the family proposed to go to Manakin Town on the James River. The inhabitants there, the previous settlers, thought they were not entitled to their portion of the land granted by King William to the Huguenots, as they had not come in time to encounter the hardships of the first settlements. The king thought differently. Jacob Michaux and family, however, declined settling there, and took up land on the river at a place known as Michaux's Ferry.
**Jane, second child of Susannah and Abraham Michaux was baptized in Amsterdam, Holland, and January 3, 1697. She married peter, son of Pierre Legrand, in Virginia about 1713

hmm...I'm looking at the story about the Susannah Rochette who married Abraham Micheaux described in "The Huguenots" by William Henry Foote described above and found in google books at https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Huguenots/lPyszQEACAAJ?hl=en

According to that publication:

> There were three daughters, of which Susannah was the youngest. At the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, 1685, the eldest daughter was about sixteen years of age.

Which means that Susannah's oldest sister was born about 1669 and Susannah was therefore born after 1669.

Other sources quoted above give her birth as 13 Apr 1667 which would make her 18.

Any possibility that we've got our Susanne Rochets confused and she's actually either the one born in 1679 who was about 6 or the one born in 1677 who was about 8?

As a descendant of the woman identified as Susanne (Rochet) Garrigues (1679-1746), I'm pretty interested in this detail.

I'm guessing the more likely truth is that this story wasn't actually about Susanne Rochet, but was about a younger sister and the story got changed as it was passed through the generations.
