Biography

Benjamin was born in 1969. He grew up at Strand-on-the Green in Chiswick, London, England. In 1973 the family moved to Fittleworth in West Sussex, England. He went to preparatory school at Westbourne House near Chichester in West Sussex in 1982 and then in 1987 went to Harrow School in Middlesex. He read archaeology as an undergraduate at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In 1991 he started a PhD in archaeology at Cambridge on the topic of the Rock Art of South-Central Africa. This was completed in 1995. He worked with Dr Chris Chippindale on his Arnhemland rock art project in Australia for the latter half of 1995 and the start of 1996. In 1997 he took up a postdoctoral fellowship at the Rock Art Research Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2000 he became Director of the Unit upon the retirement of the founding Director, Professor David Lewis-Williams. He lived at 196 Frederick Drive in Northcliffe, Johannesburg. In 2007 he met his life partner, Robert Ashton, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. In 2009, Robert Ashton moved to join him in South Africa. Ben oversaw the upgrading of the Unit to Institute status, and the construction of the South African Museum of Rock Art. His many students included: Jeremy Hollmann, Emmanual Bwasiri, Siyakha Mguni, Ndukuyakhe Ndlovu, Leslie Zubieta Calvert, Suzanne Baker, Richard Mbewa, David Pearce, Catherine Namono and Mathias Alubafi.

He left the Institute in 2013 to take up a Professorial position in World Rock Art at the University of the Western Australia in Perth. In the same year his and Robert's adoption of Julian Smangaliso Ashton Smith was approved. He first rented a house in Browne Avenue, Dalkeith, Perth. In 2017 they purchased a house in Teslin Road, Mount Claremont, Perth. Benjamin is still living.

Benjamin, notice your additions and since my mother was a Smith, was curious if you were related. As it turns out, we are related through her, and we are 15th cousins. Nice to meet you. Kerry McKenzie
Hi Benjamin,

Please take care when adding locations, you have a number of profiles born in the 1700 which is before the term United Kingdom was used. I have fixed a number of these today but there is a lot more to fix.

Also, this is not truly a source Pedigree of Herbert Alfred Johnson of Summerfield in the Parish of Prestwich in the County of Palatine of Lancaster, Esquire, M.A. Cantab., Major 4th Bn Manchester Regiment. Compiled by Charles Harold Athill F.S.A. Her Majesty’s Richmond Herald of Arms, 1899., unless you actually add some date to the biographies and use and a full link to the document so others can view it.

Here is the link to your suggestion list https://wikitree.sdms.si/function/WTWeb/Suggestions.htm?UserID=30800811

Appreciate your assistance in sorting these issue out

Hello Benjamin,

Congratulations on certifying to work on Pre-1700 profiles! It is very important to read and understand https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page.

Hi Benjamin!

Thank you for upgrading. We are so happy to have you here in the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the !world together.

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration. Don't be afraid to ask questions in our G2G forum and get involved as much or as little as works for you. Be sure to check out the tabs at the very top right hand side of your profile, there is lots to discover!

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do!

Happy tree climbing
