Benjamin was born in 1969. He grew up at Strand-on-the Green in Chiswick, London, England. In 1973 the family moved to Fittleworth in West Sussex, England. He went to preparatory school at Westbourne House near Chichester in West Sussex in 1982 and then in 1987 went to Harrow School in Middlesex. He read archaeology as an undergraduate at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In 1991 he started a PhD in archaeology at Cambridge on the topic of the Rock Art of South-Central Africa. This was completed in 1995. He worked with Dr Chris Chippindale on his Arnhemland rock art project in Australia for the latter half of 1995 and the start of 1996. In 1997 he took up a postdoctoral fellowship at the Rock Art Research Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2000 he became Director of the Unit upon the retirement of the founding Director, Professor David Lewis-Williams. He lived at 196 Frederick Drive in Northcliffe, Johannesburg. In 2007 he met his life partner, Robert Ashton, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. In 2009, Robert Ashton moved to join him in South Africa. Ben oversaw the upgrading of the Unit to Institute status, and the construction of the South African Museum of Rock Art. He left the Institute in 2013 to take up a Professorial position in World Rock Art at the University of the Western Australia in Perth. In the same year his and Robert's adoption of Julian Smangaliso Ashton Smith was approved. He first rented a house in Browne Avenue, Dalkeith, Perth. In 2017 they purchased a house in Teslin Road, Mount Claremont, Perth. Benjamin is still living.

Please take care when adding locations, you have a number of profiles born in the 1700 which is before the term United Kingdom was used. I have fixed a number of these today but there is a lot more to fix.
Also, this is not truly a source Pedigree of Herbert Alfred Johnson of Summerfield in the Parish of Prestwich in the County of Palatine of Lancaster, Esquire, M.A. Cantab., Major 4th Bn Manchester Regiment. Compiled by Charles Harold Athill F.S.A. Her Majesty’s Richmond Herald of Arms, 1899., unless you actually add some date to the biographies and use and a full link to the document so others can view it.
