Richard Cameron Hill, first child and only son of Gerry Hill and Joan (Sharpless) Hill, was born on August 8, 1953 at Toronto Western Hospital. His parents were then living in Tilbury Manor apartments, 211 Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto, Ontario;[1] but they moved that year to 55 Parkview Avenue in Willowdale (North York). In 1957, the family moved one block east to 92 Parkview Avenue, where Rick's only sibling, Julie Hill, was born in December. 92 Parkview Ave. remained the family home until 2003. As he grew up, Rick was a member of 2nd Willowdale Wolf Cubs, Scouts and Venturers. In his teens, he participated in Willowdale United Church's youth group, joined the Toronto Movie Club, a society of amateur filmmakers, and taught himself guitar and piano.

Rick was educated at McKee Avenue Public School (Kindergarten-Grade 6), Northmount Junior High School (Grades 7-8), and University of Toronto Schools (UTS) (Grades 9-13), from which he graduated with a scholarship to the University of Toronto. In his spare time, while attending Victoria College at U of T, Rick was busy as an actor, producer and director of plays, revues and musicals. He received a 3-year Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. That summer, he moved out of the family home and lived for a year each at 112 Brunswick Avenue and 710 Spadina Avenue (Apt. 307). Between 1974 and 1980, he completed the requirements for a 4-year degree.

Rick worked for the Canadian federal government from 1975 to 1978, in clerical roles at the Unemployment Insurance Commission, the Post Office, and the Departments of the Environment and of Supply and Services.

On June 26, 1976, Rick married Laurie Navan at Grace United Church in Trenton, Ontario. The couple returned to Toronto to live for a year at 59 Spadina Road (Apt. 101), and then at 93 Alcorn Avenue through 1981.

In 1978, Rick left his government job and took an intensive 6-month course in Programming Technology at Control Data Institute in Willowdale, which won him employment as a software programmer at Advertising Management Systems (1978-82) and Johnson Computer Software Team (1982-98) in Toronto. In 1981, Rick and Laurie moved to Brighton, Ontario, where they had bought their first home at 41 Young Street. Their three sons, (George, Edward (Ted) and Arthur), were born during that decade.

Between 1986 and 1997, Rick was an active member of the Brighton Lions Club, which he served as President, Secretary and Zone Chairman. He presented a program of classical music (a lifelong interest) on Queen's University radio (1997-98), and again on Loyalist College radio (2001-03).

Rick took a position in Information Services at Nortel Networks in 1998, working for a year in Mississauga and a year in Brampton before putting long-distance commuting behind him with a transfer to Belleville in 2000. In 2002 he moved out of IS into quality management, which would remain his career field until his retirement. (Between 2005 and 2010, Rick briefly pursued a side interest as a professional actor.[2]) Following the collapse of Nortel in 2009, Rick worked as an independent management systems consultant, delivering training, conducting audits, and facilitating quality system implementations. In 2015, he was hired by NQA (National Quality Assurance), headquartered in Acton, Massachusetts, as a program manager.[3][4] Between 2009 and 2019, Rick's work assignments had him travelling constantly, taking him all over Canada and the U.S. as well as to Mexico, England, Germany, Hungary, Finland and China.

Rick and Laurie both retired in 2019. In retirement, Rick serves as a board member of the Marie Dressler Foundation[5] and chair of its Vintage Film Festival,[6] and as chair of the Brighton Public Library Board.[7] He also continues to pursue his interest in acting with amateur theatre companies in the Brighton area,[8][9] and in researching his granddaughters' family tree.

As a philatelist, I have a folded~ sheet of paper 36cm x 30cm ~ while some of the postmarks, postage paid & other details are being examined forensically, the letter is addressed to David Smellie, concession 8, Vaughan by York, Upper Canada ~ letter (inside) dated Feb.25 1833.

Letter sent to David Smellie to his brother Thomas Top inside near date is the word Wellburn Not sure if this is related in any way to Smellie & relative Hill As mentioned further philatelic research into postal markings ~ cancels etc is being done including full interpretation of contents If this is important to any relatives of the Smellie family history & wishes copies I can provide these ~ by email
